Does This Look Like A Dog?

When I first formed the head out of RKT, I thought it looked like an alligator. My husband asked me if I was making a duck. icon_cry.gif Hopefully now with the nose and ears, it looks more like a dog. Maybe even a Lab mix. (Yes, the ears are supposed to be that big.) Anyway, is there any little improvements that might help. I'm not looking for highly detailed. I'm not being paid enough for that. Just anything I might have missed or that would help. I'm afraid I'm missing something because I'm so tired. Thanks!

Well, I think if you want it to look more like a Lab, the ears should be floppy and the face should be a little wider, maybe the forehead should come forward a little more, it's hard to put my finger on it. But overall, it definitely looks like a dog to me. I just would have thought more along the lines of chihuahua than Lab. You did a great job, though! I'm in awe of anyone who can sculpt and carve at all!

Looks great! Maybe add a tongue hanging out-that definitely says "dog"!

Yeah! A tongue definitely and I think it looks sorta like a dobie!! Does it have to be a "certain type" of dog? If not then you definitely got a dog!! icon_lol.gifthumbs_up.gif

Thanks everyone. Maybe it would help if I posted a pic of the actual dog too. I'm not familiar with dogs, so I was guessing lab mix. I know something is off, but I'm not sure what. Again I'm not too worried about it because I'm not being paid enough to, but if there is something I can add that will help I will.

ok-the ears should have more black around them!

Okay, the pic of the real dog shows that you nailed it! Don't worry another minute about it, it looks fantastic! How did you get the eyes to look so realistic? Amazing.

Needs some fuzz around the mouth. Really cute though.

I think more black on the ears, too. They look a bit pink. And maybe a tongue just to break up the black face?

Otherwise, cute dog!

A shepherd makes more sense. I guess I'm just used to seeing them only in brown. Anyway, I will add more black to the ears.

canoewoman: What were you thinking to use for "fuzz" around the mouth?

Sorry, I forget to mention about the eyes. I dried 2 gumpaste balls and then put them in the sockets before covering in fondant. Then cut eye slits in the fondant and opened the eyes. Finished by painting with food color.

Iv'e been following this, and you are right.....something is off. It definately does look like a dog, no doub. I think darkening the inner ear will help. For me I wonder if the eyes are too far apart....too late to do anything about it. I really think they will be happy with it. It does look like the photo. This dog isn't the easiest to model.

Definitely a Shepherd mix!

I agree. The ears could use more black and the eyes may be a little wide. Also, I think the eyes may be a little high. But I think it looks great overall. I would just add the black to the ears and it will look awesome. Better than I would have done. Awesome job.

Pretty darn close to the photo if you ask me! Maybe more black around the ears and the tongue would have been cute but if you're going strictly by the photo I'd say just add more black to the ears!

Looks great!!!

to be honest...since I think it looks like a Shepard mix the snout could be a little more squared..and the eyes could be slightly closer.

I think it's GREAT that you aren't satisfied with your product no matter how much you're getting for it! icon_smile.gif

Okay, if I ever do another I'll remember to make the snout a little rounder, the forehead slightly larger, with the eyes a little closer. Thanks!

I am really glad you showed us the side shot of the dog. It looks even better when you see the whole thing. I think it looks great now, and I find adding the little bit of black to the ears, makes it come together. You should be happy with it. I think you did a great job.

The added black did the trick I think! Seeing the side view makes it look even better!!! Kudo's!!

Perfect! They're going to love it!

If you don't mind, can I ask how much you charge for that type of cake? Also, how do you get the head to stay upright? Is it all cake or is the neck styrofoam or something else?
