I just wanted to say Hi ! Is there anyone from the NOrthern Parts of Ontario ...LOL .
Where I am ... there is only the Bulk Barn and Michael's so I know how it is to try to find things and there is nothing ...
To add to the question ... ARE YOU SELF TAUGHT OR TOOK CLASSES ... Well I'm also a self taught . I've been decorating cakes for Family and Friends since my eldest son was born ... and I just recently realized that I love it so much that I would like to do it more often . I don't know if I would go into business quite yet...but with more pratice ... I hope in the future that I would .
This is amazing to find out that there is alot of Ontariens on this site .
Good to know! I usually go to Michaels or the Bulkbarn for my baking needs but I'll check out Goldas next time I go visit my parents...
I am in Lindsay Ontario, and I order all my Satin Ice from Golda's and have it shipped to me. Even though I am about an hour and half from the store, I can't get there very often. I have bought the Bulk Barn fondant, and I really didn't like it. It's way too gooey. I tried to make a bow out of it - not pretty. It's very soft. If I were to try it again, I would add a fair bit of pwdered sugar to thicken it up. I thought it unusable otherwise.
Lindsay is about a half hour north west of Peterborough - is that North enough for the previous poster looking for northern residents? It sure feels north sometimes!
This thread if becoming lots of fun...I haven't really met or became friend's with anyone here yet,so I am lovin' find neighbours here.
Catin- where north?
I took a city progam in basic piping last year, but I think I have leraned more here!
I just started the course 1 at Micheal's and had second class tonight. I feel like I'm past course 1, but yet not really,as I think the more I learn and practice will help me greatly. I will continue on with all the course's Micheal's has to offer.
I just do it as a hobby

Hi I am from Leamington Ontario. The only thing we have here is Virgin ice but would love to try Satin ice. I'll have to get myself some. Its nice to see so many "neighbors" on this site.Take care everyone.
I know i've gotten off topic..but i'm shocked at how many people around my town are on CC. I've always seen americans,. I guess it's not such a secret place afterall.lol We should all keep in touch, it's great to talk to people so close to home.

How did you all hear about CC? Have any of you worked at any bakeries around town? I'd love to hear your stories on how and why you started cake decorating and what your future plans are. What type of training if any you've had.
This is my story. I'll try to give you the short version lol! I took my DIL to look for a wedding cake. The only one she really liked was a very simple 3 tier round, bc and some pink daisies cascading down the tiers and the best price was $350 so I thought hell I can do that! I signed up for all 3 wilton courses as Michaels, completed them before we left for their wedding in Mexico. Glorious week of pampering I might add. We threw a wedding reception when we got back and I made the cake. I ended up getting a few cake orders from it. Then my DD announced she was pregnant so I did her baby shower cake, got a few orders from that. My DIL is a supply teacher so every year I make clown cupcakes for her kids and a cake for the teachers which always gets me orders. I made my nieces wedding cake ( she lives in London) got orders because of that now I am doing her baby shower cake this weekend. I just do it from home whenever I get an order, I am pretty busy babysitting my grandson since my DD went back to work. I would love to play with cakes all day, everyday! I have just started modelling with fondant and I can't believe I waited so long to try. It is so much fun. Haven't gotten around to resizing all my cake pics to post. So that's my story What is yours?
After making a birthday cake for my grandson last September and loving it, I convinced my friend Tammy (who I am surprised hasn't found this thread yet - she's on CC too) to take the courses with me at Michaels. We took 3 courses together and loved it.
I am just doing the odd cake for family or good friends. When I retire, I might consider doing more, but I am too busy right now. Plus, I don't feel you can really be fairly compensated for your time. So, for me, it's just a hobby.
I don't even want to think how much money I have invested in cake "stuff". My husband has set up a whole area in the basement with shelving to store my pans, etc. and I am already running out of room.
It's great to find some others here from Ontario - especially from London!
I have bought the Bulk Barn fondant, and I really didn't like it. It's way too gooey. I tried to make a bow out of it - not pretty. It's very soft. If I were to try it again, I would add a fair bit of pwdered sugar to thicken it up. I thought it unusable otherwise.
The last cake I made with it was a mess. It is so sticky which makes it difficult to work with. I used to not mind it until I found the Satin Ice.
I'm not from Ontario but from Newfoundland. I will be going to either Ottawa or Toronto in the fall for some training and CAN'T WAIT to hit up a real cake decorating store! Like others, I only have access to Bulk Barn and Michael's. There is another store too but they only sell what the others carry.
On my list so far are:
fondant
Americolor gels
Nancy ,
I'm in a little town called Azilda ...about a 10 minute drive north of Sudbury .
Is everyone on Cakes Canada as well? There is more information about suppliers, etc.

Well, I was on sugarbuzz for a long time and then it got really quiet over there. I heard about cakecentral and figured i'd check it out. Then while here i heard of cakescanada. I've been visiting there for around a month now. It too is really quiet on cakescanada, but i check daily to see if anything interests me.
I'm on Cakes Canada but I find it quiet as well, and I usually get an answer quicker in this forum!
I found these on the net and I have NOT been to them ,but maybe someone else has or it might help with supples.
http://www.klarajohnsons.com/......this is in Cambridge ,which is where I grew up (darn I could have taken some great classes there by the looks of the site).
http://www.isntlifesweet.com/...between London and Sarnia and looks like it must be a cute small country store in the middle of no-where....might be worth a nice little drive one day.

Hi Ladies,

I didn't even think about going to London for supplies..I am born and raised there actually....

LOVE to hear about more people in these areas.....Lets keep in touch!!!!
I know this is kinda off the subject of Satin Ice but you are from Canada.....I was wondering if you have ever seen Fluffo shortening in your stores. I heard that they might still produce it in Canada...
Anyone seen it.........
I have a German cookie recipe that only works with Fluffo, and have tried many many other things but no go.....not the same texture or flavor.
I'm in California - thought it might be worth a try to ask......Thanks.........
I too....used to be on cakecanada...But got harder to go around that site...and is quiet as well.....I am on Wilton alot too...
Terrylee
Isn't Fluffo in an orange box with maybe some blue???
I'm pretty sure they have it at my grocery store. I have aways wondered about it???
Nancy
I definitely saw Fluffo last time I was buying shortening. Does it work well for icing? I didn't see it in the large tubs so sort of ruled it out...
I too saw it and bought some Fluffo .... I just recently used up the last of the 5 lbs i bought . I like the texture it gives . My BC is amazing with it ... I think I will continue using it in the future . And Yes it's in a redish box with a blue flash across the top .
phoufer,-- I got the Fluffo at my local Food Basics ... it's only in the 1 lb boxes ... but everytime i get a chance to stock up i do ... Going to get more every soon ... have three cakes to deliver to my childrens school in two weeks ... lol
I've never heard of Fluffo - what is it?? I have a Food Basics in my town, so I should go and check it out.
I saw Fluffo at the Valu-Mart. I think I am going to get some next time I go in.
