whenever i make a cake with frosting i usaully use a basic buttercream (it crusts soo well) recipe i have and then just change the flavor or color by adding... i've had a few people tell me that my icing is alittle too sweet but then they eat the cake and insist on having more and more and more! i thought maybe if i take some of the powdered sugar out of it that would make it better... but i was wondering if there was a recipe for maybe a whipped icing similar to like what you might get on a cake from a grocery store that someone could share with me or ANY other recipe for a great crusting icing would be sooo helpful!! i'm looking to expand my options!!
Have you tried the Buttercream Dream recipe on here? It uses unsalted and salted butter to cut down on the sweetness. I love it!
As for the whipped topping, I hate that stuff, so I'm no help with a recipe. However, a lot of people recommend Rich's Bettercreme (you can get it at Sam's Club...it's $18 for 28 lbs. at mine) or Pastry Pride.
eta: I think if you take out the powdered sugar then the icing might not crust as well, or at all. Even an extra tbsp of milk in mine can keep it from crusting.
I don't like the sweetness of bc either but I tried this recipe here and it was much better! (julies less sweet buttercream frosting)
