I CAN'T HELP YOU BUT WOULD ALSO LOVE TO KNOW.
Brush some piping gel onto your MMF or bc, then press handfuls of sugar onto the cake. Brush away excess. Or use an empty squeeze bottle to 'blow' away the excess.
Kitchen Krafts makes a glitter gel that helps emphasize the sparkle underneath the sugar.
I wonder if using corn syrup would work also...
you can also lightly mist it with water.
