Heating Core Subsitute?

This may be an obvious question but will an aluminum can work just as well as a heating core, if I cut open both ends. I know flower nail work well but I have a large cake coming up and don't want to chance the nails.

YES...it works very nicely! Hold the center piece of cake down when you remove the can so you don't have to put it back into the hole! I like to use the mandarin orange cans for this...just the right height.
