I am making an electric guitar cake for a friend's daughter's birthday, and want to have a way to have sound/music play from it, ie: her dad, a musician, will record an MP3 of a song and we want to be able have it play from the cake during the presentation of the cake. Any ideas or suggestions out there?

Wow this is a tough one, not sure if this will help, but SanDisk makes this little MP3 player called a shaker that actually plays out loud when the earphones aren't attached. We got on for my son for christmas and it works really well and has good sound. Maybe you can incorporate it into the cake or cakeboard. Cool idea, good luck!
