Making A Pig Or A Mess?

Okay Cakesters,
I need help! I am trying to make a pig on a platter. I am stacking 3 sheet cakes and plan to carve the body of the pig from that. My question is do I need to put dowels in or should I just stack and carve them. Will it crumble? Please help me!
I had to reply to this, since I just did a "wild boar" cake yesterday! I used two sheet cakes, stacked (w/out dowels) and simply carved it from there. If you want a nice fat little piggy, I would probably do 3 layers. I don't think you would need dowels - especially if he's laying down (vs standing).
Good luck! Would love to see it!
