I have a different way to make a gumpaste bow and would like to share.
First I roll out a 7" wide and approx 11" long sheet of 50/50 gumpaste fondant in the color I need. Don't roll out too much as you don't want it to dry out.

Then cut it to the width desired.
Using a premium flat top tooth pick, gum glue to the bottom of the strip.
Fold over the top of the strip to the bottom and trim the sides to make a V.
Open the loop up as much as you like.

Make approximately 21 of these loops and completey dry on their sides.

Pearlize if you wish. Then attach to cake starting from the top and working your way down to the cake.

I haven't made one yet and this looks pretty easy. Can you tell me what gum glue is and what you call the tool you cut the strips with? Thanks

bashini Posted 14 Apr 2008 , 9:19am

Thank you so much for the tutorial. I love your cake. Its beautiful!

AKA_cupcakeshoppe Posted 14 Apr 2008 , 10:11am

this seems so much easier. thanks for sharing. i lvoe the toothpick and you can just stick it on the cake and not worry about gluing it. thanks so much!

springlakecake Posted 14 Apr 2008 , 11:37am

that's a great idea. I hadnt really thought to use tooth picks. That is a great way to do it if you want to push just a couple of loops in here or there. thanks!

YALANTZI Posted 14 Apr 2008 , 11:47am

Thaks for sharing, I was having trouble making the bow with chocolate and icing it just would't stay together. this is a great idea.

fiddlesticks Posted 14 Apr 2008 , 11:49am

Thanks ! you make it look so simple ! what is gum glue ?

foxymomma521 Posted 14 Apr 2008 , 11:53am

Awesome, thanks!

mellormom Posted 14 Apr 2008 , 11:55am

Love the cake!!! In case cake queen doesn't get a chance to answer....
Gumpaste glue is just a little piece of gumpaste mixed with water. You can also put the glue in a water color pen so you always have it and it doesn't spill on you.

mellormom.. Thanks so much for the answer ! I have made that( duh ! ) I thought there was something special to buy!

FromScratch Posted 14 Apr 2008 , 12:13pm

You can make gum glue with tylose/gum trag and water too. It's a bit easier than waiting for the gumpaste to melt. icon_smile.gif

This is pretty much how I do bows too.. I use wire but I'm going to give the toothpicks a try. icon_smile.gif

fiddlesticks Posted 14 Apr 2008 , 12:58pm

Im still trying to master the bow just the reg ole way ! Melvira was trying to help me via pm last night! Im such a bow looser !!! Part of my bow problems are the big glob of RI I put in the middle to stick it all together ! When its all done it looks just like a big golb of RI I just stuck there ! Very sad ! So I just kep throwing them out ! Maybe this would be a better choice for me ! Thanks for the answers !

I just had an "a-ha" moment thanks to you!

leepat Posted 14 Apr 2008 , 1:27pm

Thank you so much. I have struggled with my bows and I think this is going to make life so much easier.

wendalynn11 Posted 14 Apr 2008 , 1:36pm

Great tips using the toothpicks...THanks!

MacsMom Posted 14 Apr 2008 , 1:43pm

Thanks a ton!
This looks so easy - I'm no longer hesitant to finally make one... (I tried the method of hanging them over a broomstick and pinching the ends together but that wasn't near is easy as it looked).

addietx Posted 14 Apr 2008 , 1:47pm

I too am having trouble with the glob of RI or chocolate showing. I think the toothpick or wire will work better for me. Thanks.

bisbqueenb Posted 14 Apr 2008 , 2:53pm

Saw this idea when it was first posted and tried it that weekend! What a great idea! and the bow was SOOOOO easy to do and put on the cake! So much easier than the traditional way! No way am I ever going to do it without the toothpicks! I even used the 'extras' I always make for a little corner detail with a tiny flower and 2 bow loops.

cakequeen50 Posted 14 Apr 2008 , 3:08pm

So glad you all like it! it is sooooo much easier for me, as I was once a bow loop loser!
Jen, Thanks for the gum glue explanation. I just use egg white but I know most use gum glue.

estrella Posted 14 Apr 2008 , 3:47pm

Thanks for sharing. thumbs_up.gif

FromScratch Posted 14 Apr 2008 , 3:55pm

You can just use water too.. it works. Just don't put too much or it'll be slippery. The same goes for the gum glue too.

I dry my loops on a wooden dowel.. you get less distortion that way.
