ok..so Im working on the top ---well the only tier for a wedding tomorrow (the rest are cupcakes)
Im trying to do the intertwined hearts design on all 4 sides of this square 5 in cake. ahhh! all i can think to do is trace the cut out image w/ a toothpick onto each side--making sure its center of course...anyone have any other easier---smarter ways! Im nervous about tracing it b/c the icing is already hard...i dont want to crack this cake!

could you use cookie cutters to make your hearts?

I remember reading this tip on here some time ago:

Using a push pin, punch holes into the paper following the design, so you have the little bumps on the underside of the paper, then gently put this against the cake, when you pull the paper away, you should have imprinted the patten on it, and then just connect the dots!

Edited to add: This really only works on crusting BC's. If your using SMBC or IMBC, you could try it when the cake is cold, and frosting rather hard, but would probably have to do some touch-ups to smooth out the icing in spots.
