Ok, nobody's willing?
What if I said the whole birthday party was based around a guy who's thesis was done on the space suit?
I was thinking space and planets.....but also for some reason I saw "fertility" things. If the party is space-themed, then I think your cookies will fit right in. Sitting on a table otherwise, I might picture a few different things. Either way, they are great! Is it an edible image or royal icing?
The lady contracted me for a party for her husbands 35th birthday. She wanted a "moonscape" cake with an astronaut and 24 cookies, round ones decorated like moons with "craters". (her husband did his graduate thesis on the space suit. I might have mentioned that before... )
They are fondant with royal icing details. I hope that sitting around the moon cake they will look like moons instead of fertility cells.....
Oh, and mom came by and said my astronaut was too big for my cake, but I don't have time to do it all over. Plus, if I was doing it to scale the astronaut would have been miniscule.
I think my confidence level on this job is plummeting.....I really hope she's happy or I'm in deep doodoo with the word of mouth thing.
I made a few extra and am throwing them in ( just 4 or so, not much) and they ended up being about 1/2" bigger in diameter then they were supposed to be. They are my first order with cookies, I've only done cakes before. I hope she likes them.
No, no, no!! You did great!!! If the cookies were sitting with the cake we would have been able to tell right away what they were. I definitely see moon craters now, thought you said they were supposed to be outer space.
thought you said they were supposed to be outer space.
Sorry, my bad. I did sorta imply that. Thanks for your input. I admit to having a real bad headache right now and I didn't sleep last night, so sorry for the dump about my low confidence....
You know how you get when you're stressed and tired. I really can take critiques, I had no problem hearing that they inspired "fertility cell" looks. I hope you don't think I was pouting after I asked for it! (But I admit to being glad they will look like moons if sitting next to my "oversized" astronaut!)
I think I've earned a nap. Gotta make the cake tomorrow!
can i just add one thing?!?!? you said they were covered in fondant? i've never worked in fondant, but... the one thing that really stuck out to me(i'm very OCD) was that the fondant was all different sizes on the cookies...sorry, i'm just huge on consistency. just my 2 cents
I don't think you have a thing to worry about. People could interpret them in many different ways, but in the context of the party AND next to the moon cake, they will be perfect and they'll love them. Great job!!
Just so you know, the very first thing I thought was space....of course, I have 2 little boys too. I think they're perfect, congrats on the cookie order.
I was thinking somewhere along the lines of something that had to do with outerspace. Or some kind of cheese but cheese isn't dark like that.lol. Don't worry, they will look great when everything is put together. Good luck.
I think they will look great next to a space cake. If the whole party is space themed, everyone will know that they are moon cookies.
Me too! The first thing I thought of was they look like the moon surface, but I thought I was going to be wrong as usual. Yea me!
I too thought space was thinnking more parts to space shuttle but can see it now what they are and they will look fab next to your cake.
Remember to post the finished cake. We would all like to see. Your doing great and don't worry about your man. He will be fine.
Good Luck.
I'm late jumping in here, but I thought of space/moon/planets right away when I saw these. They are very galactic! I think they'll be a perfect compliment to your cake.
Thanks everyone.
I hate that they are all different sizes, too. I cut the cookies from the same exact cutter I used on the fondant. When the first batch came out so much smaller than the cookies, I rolled the shapes out a little so they'd fit better. I tried to find a cutter in my big collection that would get me the same size as the cookies, but no dice. (and I have like 8 different size circles!!) I tried to make them all round without worrying too much about perfection ( I rather thought a small bit of irregularity in the craters and such might be good since nothing in nature is perfect)
But next time I gotta figure out how to get the fondant closer to the right size. I wanted to use this fondant since it's white chocolate flavored and it's the same stuff going on the cake. Otherwise I might have just flooded them with RI. Which I probably should have done, anyway.
As you do more and more cookies your confidence and skills will increase.
And for the first time you did good and giving a client a few extra cookies a smooth move on your part.
the only thing to do diff next time is to cover the whole cookie with the fondant and add the details on top so you don't see bare cookie in the craters, lol.
Also, you can cut the fondant with the same cookie cutter that you cut the cookie with.
I am looking foward to seeing your cookies around the cake.
Believe me when I tell you that they will look totally believable, because the "EYE" will fill in the details, lol
Oh, and a thought, do you have a little lustre dust? Pearl or Silvery color? that would bring the cookies to another level!
Good Job, there should be no problem with your confidence ( insert a thumbs up!)

I thought of that after I cut the holes. I tried filling in with some RI but it looked really stupid. I originally thought of cutting out the holes so they would have some dimension. But they didn't quite turn out like I envisioned. I do have pearl and silver and "moonstone" silver luster dust. What about airbrushing the whole cookie so it also coats the bare cookie craters??? (without covering the bare borders)
I think they look fine...you learned a lot for next time, huh? I know you said you used the same cutter to cut the fondant as the cookies, so maybe finding a cookie that doesn't spread as much while baking will do the trick. You did a fine job for your first time!
I'm late in posting too, but I definitely got the moon/space theme when I first saw your cookies. They look great! You should be very proud of your work.
Nah, just a little moon dust here and there would make the cookie pop enough.
what you could've done for next time was to make little fondant circles or bumps ( or something yummers like marzipan if allowed) and cover with the fondant and then with your finger press in the hole.
so the whole cookie is covered, but you did a great job! and like I said, they REALLY do NOT need anything else.
these ideas are for next time or to make the cookies a little different for another customer.
I would love to see them with the cake, whenever you post them.
Well, off to make my beach theme cake for tomorrow! lol

I wish I had thought of that. Good luck on the beach cake!
Thanks to all who responded, I do appreciate it!! Working on getting the cake baked and crumb coated. There will definitely be a pic posted when I'm done.
I feel bad!!! I think next to your moon cake, absolutely NO DOUBT they are space related... Once you said a space theme... the galaxy popped right up. I can't wait to see the whole thing put together-- it'll be great!!!
Don't feel bad, pikle....you see what you see. And I totally asked for it.
You will forgive me for the constant grubbing for advice and reinforcement on this order, I hope. I haven't had a paying order in months, and I really want to make a good showing. Kinda sucks that once you finally realize the dream of paying off your house so you can quit your day job and concentrate on your cake business, the cake business dies a horrible death! I consider this job "cake business CPR".
Geez, it's nerve wracking...why do we do this again???
Here it is, the completed project!

I've already gotten an email from the client and she loved the cake. She said her DH was impressed with the "accurate detail" on the astronaut!!
WHOOHOO!!!
OMG...everything looks fabulous!!! they totally look like moons. i'd be very surprised if you didn't get several orders from this. GREAT JOB!!!
