This is called Date Pudding - I know it is a variation of a very old recipe [desserts used to be called pudding]. I have used this recipe for 40 years. I normally bake it in a greased 8 x 8 square pan.

Date Pudding
1 cup chopped dates
1 egg
1 tablespoon butter
1 cup sugar
1 cup boiling water
1 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
A pinch of salt

Pour the boiling water over the dates and soda. Let stand till it is just warm. Mash your dates , then put in your other ingredients except the nuts. Stir together and then stir in the dates. Bake 25 minutes in 375 degree oven. Serve with whipped cream.

Your recipe is quite similar to a recipe that we have here that we call
Brandy tart.
After baking, you make this sugar mixture, with some brandy added
and pour over your cake. It is also served with fresh cream and really
tastes yummy!!
