I have been looking through You Tube (www.youtube.com) looking for some videos of people demoing cake techniques. There is a lot of videos that aren't worth watching.... Can we start a discussion thread of links to You Tube of videos that are actually helpful for us cake decorators?
Even better, most of us have a digital camera that can do short video clips, lets add them to You Tube (use cake central as one of the key words) and then post the link here on cake central!
Thanks everyone!
Here's one of my favorites:
About 10 minutes long but it has some cool stuff in it, a couple of new techniques that I started using myself. Like, taking the spatula from the edge of the cake to the middle, I think it gives me a sharper edge. And at the very end she shows how to VERY quickly pipe a rose right on the cake.
This lady on this video is SUPER FAST! No lie. Never seen anything like this. I watch it everday to be inspired...
those videos are awesome! anyone know where you can get those plastic smoothers?? i like how she got the edges so crisp.

Here is a link to Planet Cake's forum. Maybe they will tell you if you post a question, or heck, just email em!

Here it is in their store, but they are in Australia, so you might want to see if you can find out who their supplier is.

Wow! Thanks for posting that! You're right, she is unbelievably fast! You can tell she has had LOTS of experience!
Was she using a pencil in place of a flower nail? That's something I never would have thought of. I wouldn't want to eat icing that had been wrapped around a pencil lead, but I'm sure you could find something in a similar shape that would be safer. I wonder if it works better than a flower nail. It sure was working for her, huh?
Here's a repeat of info that I posted last week on a topic called "Fondant Videos and Making a Bow."
Here's a helpful video on how to apply fondant to a cake:

Great thread! I didn't know that You Tube had instructional stuff! My kids watch the silly videos and other kids doing silly things, so I thought that's all You Tube was about. I watched the links provided in this thread and WOW! Thanks for the eye opener!

From working at Kroger's - I've learned to use a wooden skewer - a large one or one of the shorter ones works too!

This is not from Youtube, but one of the members here made a dvd and I just started watching it. I'm about 1/4 of the way thru and have already learned a ton!

hi all I just watched my sugarshack video its awesome! and it was here in like 2 days could not believe how fast.
I can't wait to get my dvd from sugar shack. I had emailed her a few weeks ago about how awesomely beautiful her cakes were and she told me she was doing a how to video, I'm so excited!
Giggysmack, that was a fun youtube link. What did she say she put in the fondant? It may called something different in the U.S. Do you know? I'd like the roses to not dry rock hard like gumpaste would. Cheryl
