With lots of help and suggestions from numerous people here (thanks guys, you're all the best!) I finally got this cake done!
Long story short, our town had a local summer long event called Cat-N-Around Catskill. I'm from Catskill, NY and local businesses sponsored artists decorate these cats and they were displayed on Main St., Catskill all summer long. At the end of the summer there was a Gala to auction off the cats and the money would go to help fund many things in Catskill like the local community center and Heart of Catskill Association that does local events.
I was asked if I could replicate one of these cats in cake and being I'm always up for a challenge I said yes !!! I was nuts and never did anything like this before, but here it is. It was such a hit!
Listed first is the cat cake and then is the actual painted fiberglass cat. Don't even begin to ask for directions because it was definitely a do-it-as-it comes type thing. I can tell you that the body is 2 stacked 9x13's, the neck and head are 4, 8x2's with the top 8X2 carved into the face and ears. The body is supported with a piece of plywood with styrofoam for the belly. There are TONS of dowels and a copper pipe for the tail, with rice crispy treats covering the legs and tail, with fondant covering the entire cat. Each color you see was hand mixed (how I don't know, I was lucky I guess ). I tried to do white fondant and paint it, but that was a disaster, so each color you see is an individual piece of fondant.
WOW I think you did an amazing job replicating the cat! I love all the colours.
Well done!
You did an amazing job! Don't you love a challenge? I would have loved to have been asked to do this cake. You should be so proud, great job!
Thanks so much!! It really was fun. My cat is a little shorter and fatter, but I was nervous to make it so tall. I just said that my cat ate a little too much cake
There's no need for me to ask for directions I couldn't duplicate that work of ark witha step by step DVD, that's awesome!!!
SOOOOO....giving ol' Duff a run for his money, eh??? this is amazing work and you should be excessively proud of it!
Wow, that's MEOW-valous!!! I can tell you put a lot into it. Congrats on a huge success.
Incredibly amazing!!! I am always amazed when I see this kind of work. You have so much talent. I hope some day to be even half as good.
I expected it to be sitting-and easier!! YIKES-I don't even want to think about how you did this. It's beyond amazing!! I hope you get a special award or note in the paper or SOMETHING!!
Thanks everyone you're so kind! It was such fun and to be honest I didn't realize what a cool thing it was until I was done. Do you know when you're working on every little detail and you don't step back and take a look? That was me. It was definitely a monumental cake for me....the rest I've done have been so basic, that I was super proud of this one!
Thanks again everyone, I couldn't wait to share it here, I know that everyone here could appreciate the amount of work this baby took!
Phenomenal work You were definitely up for the challenge that this cake presented. Congrats on a job well done
