Okay, here's the deal--I've already made and dried an ocean wave made of fondant into which I had mixed gumtex. I tinted it blue before forming. It's not a great blue, but I knew I'd be covering it to blend in with the rest of the cake--mostly water, a little beach. Now, here's the question: will covering it with buttercream or piping gel soften up the wave, causing it to dissolve and/or collapse? Has anyone mixed these two products?
Thanks so much for your help!
Anyone out there with any ideas for me?
I don't have an answer for you but I am bumping to help you.
No Answers heres a bump .
I made a wave like this in my pics..but I just used 50/50 fondant and gum paste....
Help me out here a little. Are you trying to make the whitecaps on top of the waves?
I've only seen royal icing piped on fondant. I don't know if the grease in the BC would cause it to fall off of the wave.
Hopefully someone with more experience can help you though.
Is it going on the side of the cake or top, like laying down or will it be standing up balanced on the cake? If it is standing up I would use royal icing to be on the safe side. I think it would be lighter. Otherwise if the wave is flat on the cake itself, any icing would be fine. hope this is not a stupid answer to a good question!
Firstly i make my waves white and out of fondant with tylose added to it for hardening then once it has dried i use royal icing to make texture and little waves etc and the foam as such... then i paint my waves in whichever colours i like and add edible glitters or lustres for the shine on the waves i have a couple of examples in my pics just as a guide... hope you get yours sussed cant wait to see a pic.. good luck and have fun
Thanks to all of you for the ideas! I didn't even think about royal icing! I think that's what I'll do.
Ariginal, your wave cake with the wedding couple is so cute!!! Thanks for the tips! Did you mean that you use white royal icing then use food coloring to paint the wave?
playingwithsugar, I'm actually going to cover the wave I already made in order for it to have more detail and to match the rest of the ocean. The wave dried over a 20 oz. bottle. It's going to be upright. I think I'll use the same color buttercream and blend the (fondant/royal icing) wave into the buttercream. Does that make sense?
Yes, you would be using the brushed embroidery method to blend them together. If you are blending the bc onto the fondant wave, then dip your brush into hot water and blot before blending. It will streak it better.
Was that easy to understand?
Yes! Thank you!!!
yes i use white royal icing and i use white fondant for the main wave and yes then i colour them and thanks for your kind comment about my cake...
