I have to make a laptop cake and just am not sure what to use for monitor so that it stands up?...should I bake a cookie sheet like for gingerbread house??? ..Cut it out an cover with fondant? Did anybody make one (laptop cake)and maybe can give me some advice?..I would really appreciate it!
..Tried the search option to look for info but it just gives me 246 topics and I can't browse through all of them to look for info(my 3 y.o. barely lets me post this hehe)
If you haven't done this yet, search Google Images for laptop cake.
Go to www.google.com and then click on Images. I got better results without the quotation marks, more than I needed, but the ones on the first page were better. Maybe if you cilck for larger views and study them you can figure it out? They might be using cardboard covered with icing or something? I've seen cute ones with the monitor lying flat, but I like your idea better.
Keep us posted!
I like the idea of the cookie. I'd cover the cookie with fondant and maybe write "Happy Birthday" or whatever on the screen. HTH.
I have meade two laptops the first one I covered a piece of form core wirth fondant and attached with tooth picks and the second I used cardboard covered with fondant and tooth picks. hope this helps
I would use a large cookie and cover it in fondant, that way the whole cake is completly edible...
Thank you so much for all your advices!
Just finished baking a LARGE (teeheehee) gingerbread monitor..the only problem now I think it might be too heavy to be held up..must figure out how to support it.
So this is so far what I came up with , I was thinking maybe this way I can insert that panel into the cake..but it feels SO heavy..must think this detail further ..somehow I don't think the cake will hold it up
BakingwithAloha-I've googled and saw a few that looked interesting but there is no way to know how they've managed to keep the screen up
frog80-there is this a request for a virus to be incorporated into this cake hehe not only that but it has to look like Nemo(buahaha I tell ya! This lady saw a picture of a cake that I made for my daughter's bday(with Nemo on top!) and wanted "this cute thing but without the fin and such maybe you can somehow incorporate that into cake )..Sooo,we'll see what happens I am thinking either to make it come out of the monitor or the keyboard.
Nemo's dad that I have to use as my virus inspiraton )))))))))))))))))
shkepa-did the cakes transfer ok? This lady will come here to pick it up ,I am wondering whether it will hold up during trasfer..will have to keep my fingers, eyes, legs, etc. crossed hehe or should I go and assemble it there?? Do you have any pics of your laptops by any chance?
I like the cookie idea from Cookie Monster. Wouldn't a cookie that large thought that is standing up possibly break too? Seems one of those Websites in Google Images would give a hint to out they did their monitor.
Someone just posted a laptop cake yesterday I think - I saw it in the gallery when I scrolled through latest updates. I think she said she used graham crakers for the monitor piece. Her cake looked awesome - she might be able to share some tips with you if you track her down.
BakingwithAloha and vonnie99 thank you so much for your advices, the cake is finally done and is gooone!
Let me tell you my not so great laptop cake story. Cake turned out ok, I like the end result but trasferring it to the client...OMG... I thought I was giong to die right on the spot! Darn monitor fell forward, must've been the car ride that shook it up so it lost what stability it had .. sooo customer comes out to greet me and there I am strugling to put it back together. So the client is reassuring me that it's ok and not to worry about it..yeah, as if I could, my heart is just pounding disaster, disaster. Oh well, what can ya do. Brought the darn thing up, fixed it as much as I could (forgot to bring RI and fondant "just in case" so had to just use toothics and water),those little yellow stickies broke off, monitor looked messy..Anyways, I appologied and told her that atleast I took lots of pics(like 50 ))) of this cake and I'll make them a CD.
Anywho, came home and still it was bothering me so I emailed client with some pics of cake and told her that I'll give her 20$ discount for unintended damage. I mean when I fixed it it looked ok but not as good as it looked when it left my house.
Here is my laptop cake. Screen made out of gingerbread dough as I showed above. Wilton's rolled fondant covering the cake and details. Will post different sides of it but please tell me if it's too many pictures I'll remove them!
PS: next time DEFINITELY will be iserting some skewers or something in the screen and /or will make a book or something and place it behind to support the cake from the back.
That looks so good - nice job! I especially like that you put post - it notes on it - very cute touch.
Its too bad that your delievery didn't go so well - chalk it up to experience!!
Thank you so much! Customer liked it too.. but o/c the stupid screen fell which still kinda makes me feel aweful. Actually they didn't even take the 20$ I offered to give back ,received an email from this lady saying not to be silly and it's ok. AND she send pics of me in the process of fixing the cake ))and hinted that in December she'd probably order a globe on her dad's bday ..so I take it everything is ok.)
Maybe I shouldn't assemble 3D cakes at home ? How would you do it, transfer it in pieces and put it together at customer's place? Or assemble at home with plenty support?
i think the cake looks wonderful...maybe next time u an attach the monitor last minute instead of driving with it on...and thats me guessing that you drove with it on the cake already..
and thats me guessing that you drove with it on the cake already..
Yup..not my smartest move ever.))))))
Thanks for the advice!
Jazzinitup, it's an awesome cake! I would never have thought of the giant biscuit idea though. Did the cake manage to hold it up or did you use other things (that were still not strong enough during transport but would have done the trick otherwise)?
I'm going to be trying to make one for my nephew and want the whole thing to be edible so am really curious.
Thanks so much for sharing.
jazzinitup: I think you did a great job on the cake.
jazzinitup: the cake is awesome!!
You should not give her discount if she doesn't ask... Are you Russian?
