Ok, outside of my husband and my children I have not made a cake for someone else's occasion before. My sister-in-law wanted a shamu cake for a bday party for my two nephews. This was my first carved cake as well. They seem to have liked it. I only wish I would have put teeth on shamu. (Ignore the toothpicks, I forgot to take them out before I took the picture). Shamu is an almond sour cream pound cake covered in fondant. The bottom is a white scratch cake with butter cream icing. Seaweed, anemones, starfish and lettering are royal icing.

How fun! I remember how nervous I was when I did my first cake for someone other then family. But after seeing the reaction it made me want to do more and more.

I baked the cake in a loaf pan and then turned it on it's side to carve it. That allowed me to make it more vertical than horizontal. Got the basic body shape done then cut the mouth. I had to make that a little wider than I wanted to allow space for the fondant. the Dorsal fin and tail are fondant.

wow you did a very nice job. shamu looks great. can i just ask (probably a stupid question) what are the toothpicks for anyway?

destini377 Posted 16 Nov 2006 , 9:05pm

Oops, I forgot to mention that icon_redface.gif geez... sorry, I had saran wrap over it in my fridge just before I was getting ready to leave and deliver it. I didn't have a box it would fit in. They were keeping it off my icing and from putting pressure on his tail. In my rush I forgot to take them out before snapping the picture icon_rolleyes.gif

not a stupid question icon_smile.gif
