I make buttercream sunflowers directly on the cake using this technique. Use a round cookie cutter to imprint the sunflower center onto the cake. Fill the circle with black/dark brown stars. The tip size will depend on how big you want to make your sunflowers. Tip 13 for small sunflowers, Tip 18 or 19 for larger sunflowers. Pipe a row of yellow leaves all the way around the circle. Pipe a second row above the first row staggering them so that they are not laying directly on top of the leaves in the first row. Use #66 for smaller flowers, #70 for larger sunflowers.

Small sunflowers can also be made in advance and air-dried.

Thank you for the replies. I don't know why it did not occur to me to make the sunflowers using the whipped cream frosting directly onto the whipped cream frosted cake.
