I am doing a football themed birthday cake. How do you recommend making goal posts for the cake? I have thought of royal icing, but the party is at a skating rink and I am not so sure that they would stand up to a bunch of 8 year olds on skates.
I am open to all suggestions.
If the posts don't need to be entirely edible, I would cover wooden skewers or dowels with fondant or GP. It will definitely hold up best. I recently did this for a nine year old's Birthday cake, he wanted a wrestling ring.
how would I attach the l__l part to the skewer? I have thought about straws, lollipop sticks etc, but can't come up with a way to attach the l__l to the "l" part, short of duct tape.
I did one last weekend came out pretty good. I used 50/50 fondant/gumpaste rolled out a rope long enough and thick enough to insert wire. I cut two pieces for the sides, and two for the bottom and the stick part. I cut the wire a and inserted them into the pieces them I glued them together to form the goal post with gumpaste glue.
Thanks for that suggestion yummy,
I was just asking my wilton class instructor (I am currently in the fondant and gumpaste class) if that would be sturdy enough. I think that is probably the way I will go with the goal posts.
Thanks for the advice, I know I could count on CC for the answer.
i dont know if you can find them but the popeye candy sticks were my first though. or depending on how big you need it you can also use the candy sticks that are like a straighted out candy cane. Then all you have to do is use melted sugar to glue the sides together.
You're welcom sandygirl! I just realized wilton has the football cake toppers with the players and a goal post it's yellow. I said to myself SELF, next time I do a football theme cake, buy the set and lay the goal post down and cover with royal icing, let dry completely turn over and do the other side. I don't know if this would be better than what I did and suggested to you, but hey it seems like it would be faster.
I would form it out of heavy guage white covered wire and then wrap it in white floral tape.
