HI! I have only been into cake decorating since about 3 months ago, so I don't have a lot of information for you. But, I did just take a wilton fondant and gum paste class through Hobby Lobby. It was fun. Do you have any craft stores that offer the wilton classes in your area? if so check there.
Hi Linda!
Welcome to the biz!
There are countless resources out there you just have to find who and what you like best. Some of my favs are Cakes by Sam, Bakery Crafts,
Cal Java for fondant, and Beryls.
As for classes, my of the greats offer classes all over the country, just check into their websites. For more localized classes, check into your craft stores and if you have a local cake supply store, many times they offer classes as well.
As for pricing, check your competitors in your area so that you are comparable and then you can adjust accordingly.
Good luck and if you need any other advice don't hesitate to ask!
If you check out www.cakeboss.com, their software can help you a ton with your pricing by getting you very familiar with your costs, etc. The owner of the company is a member of Cake Central, and developed the software with a ton of input from people here, so it is very well thought out.
As far as suppliers, are you looking for supplies or ingredients? For supplies, Bakery Crafts is a nice company to work with. I get most of my ingredients delivered to me from Gordon Food Service (butter, eggs, flour, etc) Don't forget to look for local suppliers that can save you a ton in shipping on things like paper/box products. Good luck with your new venture!
Happy Baking,
Beth
My favorite place to shop for supplies other than ingredients is a local cake/candy supply store, but you can also buy from them online - www.candylandcrafts.com.
If you can prove that you are a legitamite legal business, then you can get an account with CK Products. You can't beat their deals...they are definitly the cheapest. The only thing is that you have to place a minimum order of at least $100. To get an account with them they need proof that you are a business and not just anyone doing this as a hobby. They check to see if you have a business listing in the phone book etc. It is a pain to establish an account, but very much worth it!
Their website is www.ckproducts.com
Also, pheil and holing-www.cakedeco.com is very good, just a little more expensive!
I buy FondX from:
http://www.caljavaonline.com[url]
or
[url]http://www.cakedeco.com
I also LOVE:
http://www.intotheoven.com
http://www.cooksdream.com
I get cake drums from one of the places listed above- you have to have a tax ID and set up an account, I forget the name!
