I'm making a cake for my annual church picnic. I want to make a replica of our sanctuary building. I'm assuming I will carve a stack of rectangular cakes to form the shape of the building, but the roof of the building extends beyond the walls into an awning over the garden. Any ideas on what to use to make the roof? Can I get fondant to dry flat and lay it over the top of the cake without it falling off or breaking off at the ends? Maybe rice krispie or sugar cookie material?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. icon_smile.gif

You could use dried fondant "tiles" and attach them with RI.

I like Doug's idea. That would probably be the easiest. Unless you want it edible, then I'd suggest doing it with gingerbread, or sugar cookie. Be sure to make extras, in case they break. icon_smile.gif (learned that the hard way)

I made a roof with gingerbread once, and covered it with royal icing tiles. I think those would be a bit too thick for yours, though.

I can't wait to see a photo. I like the way the church is built. Very nice.

I wish you the best of luck. I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I would suggest gumpaste rolled out like fondant, then let to dry.
