A friend of mine sent me this today.
A little background: Neiman-Marcus, if you don't know already, is
a very expensive store; i.e., they sell your typical $8.00 T-shirt for
$50.00. My daughter and I had just finished a salad at a Neiman-Marcus
Cafe in Dallas, and we decided to have a small dessert. Because both of
us are such cookie lovers, we decided to try the "Neiman-Marcus cookie."
It was so excellent that I asked if they would give me the recipe, and
the waitress said with a small frown, " I'm afraid not, but you can buy
the recipe." Well, I asked how much, and she responded, "Only two
fifty-it's a great deal!" I agreed to that, and told her to just add it
it to my tab. Thirty days later, I received my VISA statement, and the
Neiman-Marcus charge was $285.00! I looked again, and I remembered I
had only spent $9.95 for two salads and about $20.00 for a scarf. As I
glanced at the bottom of the statement, it said, "Cookie
Recipe-$250.00". That was outrageous! I called Neiman's Accounting
Department and told them the waitress said it was "two fifty", which
clearly does not mean "two hundred and fifty dollars" by any reasonable
interpretation of the phrase. Neiman-Marcus refused to budge. They
would not refund my money because, according to them, " What the
waitress told you is not our problem. You have already seen the recipe.
We absolutely will not refund your money at this
point." I explained to the Accounting Dept. lady which govern fraud
in the state of Texas. I threatened to report them to the Better
Business Bureau and the Texas Attorney Generals office for engaging in
fraud. I was basically told "Do what you want. Don't think of how you
can get even, and don't bother trying to get your money back. I just
said, "Okay, you folks got my $250.00 and now I'm going to have $250.00 worth of fun." I told her that I was going to see to it that every
cookie lover in the USA with an email account has a $250.00 cookie
recipe from Neiman-Marcus...FOR FREE. She replied, "I wish you wouldn't
do this." I said "Well, perhaps you should have thought of that before
you ripped me off!" and slammed down the phone. So here it is!
Please, Please PLEASE pass it on to everyone you can possibly think of.
I paid $250.00 for this, and I don't want Neiman-Marcus to EVER make
anot er penny off of this recipe.

Holy Cows! I'm so sorry that you had to go through that. Who would have thought that they would charge $250 for just a recipe??? That's insane!
Sorry, I meant either your friend or whoever had this happen to them.
I don't know where your friend got the email but this story has been going around for years, even before email was invented!
I have not tried the recipe, it may be good but by all accounts I have heard this story is one of those urban legend type things.
it is an urban legend and listed on the urban legend website and this particular post is almost word for word off the website.
I've had the recipe for years...you would think whoever keeps spreading this story would at least raise the price-haha
I do have this recipe or one like it, got it from NM Corp when this hoax first came out. They are good cookies....it just makes a lot! I have made it twice once as recipe said.....way too many cookies
"please dont waste our times with such things...."
I don't see that this is a waste of our time any more than some of the other "stuff" that gets posted in these forums! It was posted in good faith and was baking related. Janice
OK Janice you are right...I agree...I have taken that out. I didn't realize how that sounded until I reread it....I didnt like it. Thank you for bringing it up.
Urban Legend or not, is the recipie any good?
I think the recipe is great.... I have made it twice. Try it.
Flay......I see that it is a large recipie. When I make cookies, i usually use the Wilton 1oz. cookie scoop and freeze them. That way I can take out what i want whenever i want. Can these be frozen in this way?
ya know I never thought about that.....but yeah I would think it would be perfect for that....
My cousin gave me that recipe a couple of years
ago with the story her that it happened to her
friend. The cookies are great .I make them
all the time.There my fav.
see even a new poster....famousamous has helped us here with a recipe.....thanks famousamous.....
Thanks for posting the recipe! I do remember seeing this go around about a year ago, but never wrote down the recipe. I have it now and can't wait to try the cookies...
Thanks again Denise
This is an urban legend, but regardless it is a very good recipie. I freeze it all the time. And I have also added instant coffee to the recipie to make more of a mocha chip cookie - and let me tell you, there are never any left.
This reminds me of the $250 red cake story too
cool story lisa
I hadn't heard of that one...... looks like a red velvet cake... I may try it to see the difference between that one and my family's waldorf astoria red velvet cake.....
my sister in law gave this recipe to me years ago.we put 1/2 choc chips and 1/2 butterscotch chips.it dose make alot of cookies .we only make them for at xmas.
AAAhhhahahahaha! Silly chain emails! I figured it was a "hoax" but funny none the less. I think I will call these cookies 250 surprise!
Back to the recipie......What is "Blended Oatmeal"?
I am sure that blended oatmeal is just the regular oatmeal. That is all I used the two times I made it. Just make sure it is NOT the "quick oats" but the regular. The quick oats have been treated a special way so that it will cook faster whereas the regular cook oats takes time because of all the blended types of oats. I can also say that the recipe that famousamous put on here is the only one that I have ever seen it with the word blended on it.
