I think it depends on the design of your cake. If the design is going to be very elaborate, you may not have the time to make the cake from scratch as well. I get nervous serving people cake that I have made from scratch because it seems the texture changes from cake to cake, I think the from a box cake are a bit more reliable, in terms of moisture. But hey if ya got the time, go for the scratch!
