I've never used fondant before, but am anxious to try...

I have heard from somewhere* that it tastes really bad. Is that true? Or is it like any other icing?

Which is better/easier/cheaper - store bought or home-made?

I plan to use some to just get some experience and to see what its like, but I thought I'd get everyone's opinion first...

*(don't ask where - I have small children, and they suck all my brain function out before I can use it! icon_razz.gif )

The only ready-made fondant I've used is Wilton and it tastes terrible, IMHO. I've heard that Pettinice or Satinice (not sure which) tastes really good. There is a recipe on this site for MMF - marshmallow fondant - which is what i use. Easy to make and tastes good.

The Wilton rolled fondant is nice to work with once you knead the heck out of it but it tastes and smells like paint, IMO. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the MMF (marshmallow fondant) recipe I found on here and found it to be quite easy to make and use. It took a bit of leg work (or rather arm work) to get it to color but tasted fantastic.

I haven't tried the Marshmallow fondant (MMF) yet, but I would really like to! So far, I use the homemade rolled fondant recipe in the wilton books, and I really like it. You can add whatever flavoring you like, and I make mine taste just like buttercream. The packaged stuff tastes really gross. I've heard that overall, fondant keeps better and longer than MMF, so it works for me! icon_smile.gif

Fondant taste like crap but everone loves the way it looks. I take a couple of bags of candy melt, melt them down, add a little karo and mix it with the fondant. It taste great and is a lott easier to smooth than fondant. Also try the rolled buttercream It works great too and the taste is great. i have also just melted candy melts added some kayro and rapped it in s. rap. Let it sit for a few hours and rolls nicly over cakes, but it is hard to make flowers or anything else with it.

Yes, try it. It tastes good. I tend to think that if you make fondant yourself, it tastes better than the Wilton packaged brand.

Other are good but expensive....

I think its cheaper to make them though....
