Okay, I have a b-day office cake due next Friday. I am looking for a recipe for a cake and a topping that is out of this world. I am not looking to decorate this cake, I am just going for awesome taste this time. Any ideas? I have never make a cake from scratch but would love to try! Thanks.

My personal favorite is my mother's sour cream chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream.

1 cup sour cream
2 tablespoons vinegar (I know, but trust me)

Beat together and add:
1/2 cup cocoa
2 cups flour

Mix in:
1 cup boiling water (trust me again icon_biggrin.gif )
1 tsp vanilla
2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt

Bake at 350 for approx 30 minutes, depending upon pan shape.

It is a very moist, dense cake that can be dressed up with whatever frostings and fillings that you like.

here is a lb cake recipe that has a sweet crumbly top that is thick and really good.

Buttermilk lb cake

3c allpurpose flour(NOT SR)
3 c sugar
1c shortening
1c buttermilk with 1/4 tsp baking soda mixed in with it.
6 eggs separated
3tsp vanilla

Cream sugar and shortening. Add buttermilk and egg yolks alternating each. Add vanilla.
Whip egg whites till the forn soft peaks Fold in to batter mixture.

Pour into a well greased/floured or pam'd bundt pan. Cook at 325 for 1 1/2hours. Yes 1 1/2 hours. DO NOT OPEN OVEN the first hour. IF you do the cake will not rise like it is suppose to. Trust me do not even peek at it. If the top starts to get tooooo brown cover it with foil and cook for the entire time. Check with a toothpick to make sure it comes out clean. Cool in pan. Once you flip the cake out flip it back over so the crust is on top,
This is really good with coffee in the morning.

http://cake.allrecipes.com/az/HeavenlyWhiteCake.asp this is mine...its white, so you can add any extract to get any flavor you want, and its lower in fat than most other cakes.
