Cake Disaster - Need A Durable Cake

Please help!! My cake fell apart on me as I was frosting it. I am trying to make a tea pot cake with the sports ball pan, with a six inch cake in the middle, with fondant on it. I need a strong cake to hold all this. Should I use a pound cake recipe or what??? Or should I make sure there is separaters and dowle rods between each layer??
Your advice strongly needed!

Yes, a pound cake would be more dense and durable.
