Lots of great pictures so far!! Great thread idea.  Here are a few 3D cakes I've done that turned out pretty well:

This was a cake for my son's 11th birthday. He was having a mad scientist party, and we decided this might be a good way to represent the theme. He's ordered a new pet to take over the world! WASC (which is his favorite), with a standard american buttercream. The box sides and top are modeling chocolate (first time working with it--pretty intriguing), and the tentacles are fondant. Packing peanuts are marshmallows, obviously. Images are on edible paper/edible ink. Thanks for looking!

The doghouse is made out of vanilla butter cake with eggnog-flavored buttercream, covered in fondant. Snoopy is RKT covered in fondant and Woodstock is gumpaste. All credit for the design goes to jenbakescakes. I'm still in the early stages of this hobby, and thus sincerely flattering others by imitation. ;)

700

This is my second attempt at a sculpted cake. I used the cake for 3D modeling recipes here on CakeCentral (vanilla for the Pokeball and chocolate for Pikachu), a mixture of homemade and Fondarific fondant, and a simplified swiss meringue buttercream.

AGreat thread. Took some time but I viewed all! They are all great. I have to say for those of you shy to post. Here is my first and this thread's worst! But my boy Loved it! I researched (cake body pattern/altered) and/or came up with it on my own. Note: up until this cake I'd only ever decorated w toys or marshmallow peeps. And I managed a buttercream ruffle and rose cake (all for my kids' birthdays). Not only my first ever attempt w 3d cake also first attempt w fondant. It supposed to be "Toothless" he has a bigger head. Honestly I think he looks like a scary brown mouse/rat.

Noosie, Loving the Spidey cake!

I made these chimps for a bride who'd seen a lone gorilla birthday cake on my (old) website and wondered if I could do a chimpy wedding version. She loved it so much that I had to add the banana for them to 'cut' for the photographer, she couldn't bear to cut it.

Chester the long haired guinea pig. A customer ordered it for his girlfriend who's fur baby was the centre of her universe.  She loved it so much that he ordered the same the following year. That time I made 'chester' popping out of a birthday parcel.

Fairy castle cake that I made for a very good friend's little girl.

A replica of a local school building that I made for their 200th birthday.

Ladies and gents, the 3d cakes are fabulous! Here is mine. The theme was Sherlock Holmes (the tv series), so the cake is the house he lived in- 221B Baker Street. The bit I like best is the balcony- it is gumpaste floor with royal icing railings :)

:A house cake made of chocolate cake and Smbc. The cake bulged at the sides which is why the walls are wonky. Bay window and balcony made of royal icing, everything else is fondant and gumpaste. The roof is RKT inside.

My grandson is an avid hunter and wanted a deer cake. Thanks to the ideas shared on this website, this is what I came up with. ps. His ear was setting up, hence the stick in the head.
