When you make a fondant cake...say a round layered...do you have to make the edges round so the fondant doesn't crack??

nope! You can have straight edges Fondant should be pliable enough not to crack. You can test this by rolling some into a ball and then squeezing that ball between your thumb and index finger If it stays smooth you are ready to go! ( If it cracks keep kneading!)..
