has anyone ever used this instead of vanilla? Was reading about it on another website and was thinking about ordering it but not sure. $5.75 for 9 oz.

I've ordered some but haven't gotten the chance to use it yet... it smells really good .. she (Earlene) said it has a long shelf life

I was wondering what flavor it would give cakes/icing

I'm not really sure .. I'll be making a cake on Wednesday night .. I'll post something and let you know ... I plan to use it in some MMF to add some flavor to it

I know Earlene swears by it. I've been meaning to try it. It's a butter/vanilla flavoring. I've just been using 2 parts clear vanilla to 1 part butter flavoring.

I've got a friend who uses the Butavan and would not think of using anything else. Her cakes and icing are delicious using it! Gives it a much better flavor than just using the vanilla and butter flavors.

That's great to know thyterrell.. I plan to try some in my icing Wednesday night .. I have 2 cakes to do .. I retirement cake (very small retirement party ... 8 parish managers, 3 program specialist and a regional administrator) .. he's in to horses and country/western stuff so I did a horseshoe .. not sure how I'm decorating that one yet lol .. the other is for my daughter .. 2 co-workers at her job have birthdays ... I think I'm doing that one with MMF .. I want to try using a little bit of the butavan in it to add a bit more flavor .. I'll use it instead of water.. if too thick, I'll add a tiny bit of water icon_smile.gif

Gracie-just be prepared-this is one of the most learning and sharing sites there is for cakes--everyone here is so helpful and willing to share-don't ever be afraid of asking and there is no such thing as a silly question-we all learn off each other--and welcome!!

The least expensive place I've found to buy butavan is at www.foodservicedirect.com It's $24.35 a gallon/case there compared to $60.00 at Earlene's. There's a 3 case minimum but you can buy other products to meet the minimum.

I bought some and it smells great. I've used it in small quantities on a few things and it does enrich the flavor some.

She said that it doesn't need refrigerated but I think mine smells a little rancid after having it for a few months! Best to stick it in the fridge anyway.

I also bought the orange emulsion and it is sooooo good!
