Ok, this cake is due in the morning .....and I'm not sure where to go from here. I was going to attempt a few fondant tents, a fisherman at the "lake" and some trees ..... but I really need to sorta impress these people (4 potential quinceanera cakes in the future....big $$ for me) and I'm just not that experienced with fondant characters (as in .. like... i've done NONE) and don't want to attempt them anymore plus it's 1:50 am lol

The theme is SUPPOSED to be camping and/or fishing. UGHHH ....HELP

THis is what I have so far...

Its, really late to try to make fondant figures, they won't be dry. I think you might be able to get away with it thought. But a fondant tent won't dry enough to hold straight. color flow and royal might be options, but also not sure they would dry enough. Can you use some types of toys, or cake topper. sorry not much help.

I'm not a great modeler either. But, maybe a couple of pup tents out of fondant or bc covered graham crackers with a small campfire in front of them and then you could figure pipe or mold someone swimming. That way you don't have to do the whole body - just a head and innertube! Good luck!

yeah, i was worried about drying time too but it's really warm here so I was *hoping*. I was supposed to be done HOURS ago but had a slight cake mishap lol

Good ideas amysue ...thanks!!

if you have some tylose add it to the fondant and you will be surprised the fondant willbe dry enough. You will be fine i do it all the time as i a bugger for last minute stuff ehehe so make do with adding the tylose. also use toothpicks where needed or raw spaghetti strands fo supporting the heads on and the tents up if needed. cant wait to see the finished cake. you'll be right

Unfortunately I am still up icon_mad.gif I've only done a little fondant work so take this with a grain of salt... if you have som gumpaste, you can mix equal parts of gumpaste with the fondant. That will make a mix that will set up quickly. I'd imagine the tent would be easy - just make two rectangles and a triangle (for the back of the tent if you want) and "glue them together in the shape of a tent with a gumpaste/water mix or royal icing. Trees = pretzel sticks with stiff green buttercream. Fisherman - act like you are 6 again and build a man. You can use a small pretzel rod for the rod and improvise on the string. Lastly do you have any piping gel? If so you may want to use that over the blue to make the water look more realistic. Just my thoughts. I would wish you luck but you don't need it! thumbs_up.gif

a few tents, a camp fire, and a boat in the lake.... it looks a little "bare" as is.

Oooo I do have piping gel, I didn't think of that! I'll definately do that!

I think I am gonna make a couple tents at least....they should dry fairly decent. It definitely is too bare to leave and it doesn't scream "campground" lol

This is the first time I've made a cake without having something to go on first ....I've always had a photo or something to look at. This is just outta my head ......now I remember why I use pictures LOL

You could also add around the campfire - s'mores!! maybe take some spaghetti and add a little dab of fondant for marshmallows. If I think of anything else, I'll write back soon.

I think for the tents I would use crackers and icing, or put your fondant on the crackers for stablility. I made loops 2 days ago with 50/50 gumpaste fondant and they still are not dry. It is humid here but they are in the house with AC on. I think your people will be ok, if you use toothpick or spagettti, down the center.

Really?! I made little round boxes last month out the 50/50 mix. I was able to glue the pieces together as I cut them out. Thanks for the heads up.

OMG twooten!! That is GREAT!! I'd give my left limbs to have some pretzel sticks here right now .... those trees are great!

I rolled out some yellow fondant and did the rectangle/triangle thing ...and they are actually standing on their own already once I glued the top peaks together! We'll see what they look like in the morning. I may run to Walmart when it opens (yes, I live in an area with NO 24 hour walmarts :O ) and grab some pretzel sticks!

Hi! I just made a camping cake a couple weeks ago. http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&file=displayimage&pid=652403
I glued two graham crackers together for a tent, and covered with fondant. Trees out of ice cream cones and royal icing. For the guy in the tent, I just made arms and a head. Fondant logs and rocks. Toothpics with white fondant for marshmallows. I know it's probably too late for you to do some of these things, but I thought I'd give it a shot anyways. I'm sure whatever you come up with will be great! Good luck! thumbs_up.gif

Well, it's fairly early for me so I am up. Let's see if I can come up with a few ideas for you.

If you have pretzels you can make a nice campfire really fast and very cute. Then just take abit of orange BC and use your small flower tip to make the flames. If you have marshmellows, you can roll them in some instant chocolate milk mix, or hot cocoa mix and mis shape them a bit and make them look like rocks and make a circle around the fire like a fire pit. Also they would work around the edge of your water. Then if you had some graham crackers, you can make a pup tent with, cover them in BC and make it smooth. I'd color the icing whatever color you wish the tents to be first. Take a piece of spagetti and angle it from the front center of the peak and make it look like the tension rope.

If you do it right you could make some Royal icing and pipe a fish onto parchment paper. Put it in the freezer and let it harden. Make two so you have a back and a front of the fish. Once it's dry, take a peice of 20 guage floral wire, or a piece of spagetti and put between the two sides with BC. (Tip: Don't forget that less shortening or butter in BC means it will crust or harden much faster.) Then you just stick the fish in your lake, and pipe a bit up the wire or spagetti to make it look like the water is splashing upward.

If you want to put some people on it, just make a little sleeping bag, and stick a head on the end of it, on top of a pillow of fondant. These don't have to harden and will be a cute addition to your cake.

If you want to make a fishing pole, just take a peice of spagetti, cover it in fondant, and fashion a reel on one end out of fondant.(a cylinder with a little knob on the end) Then while your piping your fish you can pipe a wavy line for the fishing line. Once you put it together, a peice at a time, you can make a sitting log from a few pretzels iced together of if you have the big ones use one of those cut off and the tip dipped in brown coloring. Lean the fishing pole against it with the line "in the water". You could even make alittle float with a pinch of fondant colored red. That would be really cute!

If you take a quartered graham cracker and 2 broken in half pretzels, you can ice together a table. And the leftover broken pretzels from the fishing log you can color dip the ends and set in for the chairs around the table.

If you color some fondant gray or enamel blue, you can make a little coffe pot, or a pan, and maybe a plate and cup. Place them on the table.

If you want to make them stand out, dust them with some silver luster dust.

The "topper" for it would be a if you could make a tree and have a branch with roll of toilet paper hanging from it. For the tree trunk you could take a dowel, or a pretzel and cover it in fondant shaped and colored to look like a trunk and simple branches. For your leaves, mush up a few large marshmellows with your fingers, make them look like fluffy bunches of leaves, and roll them well in some powderded sugar colored with green dust or pulverized sidewalk chalk. (Sidewalk chalk is non-toxic, tasteless, and makes a fantastic dust!! I use it all the time!!)

If you don't have either one of those, cover them with BC piped on after you place them on your tree. That would work too!

Well....I guess I really got carried away with my ideas!! Hope they help!!

Good luck to you!! thumbs_up.gif

If ybou have a little Teddy bear, you could put that on it with a toy boat and some fishing poles made out of spagetti and icing, like the bear scared everyone off, no Fondant or gum past work yeah.

you dont need pretzels just use the spaghetti and make a sausage shape and put the spaghettei up it or a skewer as then you can also leave some spare on the end to stick into the cake for stability and do the piping thing for the top of the trees.. still thinking for ya... hehehe may have more later
