I need to make an elephant cake and I would like it to look like those indian elephants with the fancy headdresses/blankets/ gold etc... Any Ideas on how to get an elephant shape to stay together? Or any tips would also be appreciated.
I know this is sort of babyish, but it could be something that would get you started. http://www.wilton.com/recipes/recipesandprojects/bday/abirthdaytheyllneverforget.cfm They used a plastic separator plate with the actual cake on it, and the pillars under the plate became the elephant's legs. You could make the icing smooth and add the beautiful Indian trappings on it, and it would be very pretty indeed. Be sure to post a picture when you get it done!

I think I have seen a 3 D elephant in a Wilton yearbook. I think they used the rubber ducky pan and then made the ears out of cardboard coved with icing. If I can remember right the nose was made out of a plastic dowel rod. There were instructions in the back of the book.
Someone may know what year it was. I can go through my books to see if I can find it.
That is the cake I was talking about. You might be better off sculpting an elephant out of gumpaste and placing it on top of a round tiered cake. Just an idea...I am horrible at 3-D cakes!
Good luck!
