Hey again......I have a small question.....and that is, that from the saturday wedding cake I set up, once again, the nasty neighbor pops up......she and the DJ were talking about something about not enought room for the dance floor, because of where the cake table was sitting..(This was the table the bride wanted the cake on, so I followed her directions). I figured that if the bride wanted the cake and table somewhere else, she would have told me..She was my client, not the neighbor........
Anyway here....the neighbor and DJ both asked me if the cake was stable enough to move with the table. I told them both, it is better if the cake is left as is once it is set up. And I said, that if they wanted the table with the cake moved to go talk to the bride and let her make the final decision....So, there the two go, and "bother" the bride, who by this time, already came out with her mother to meet with me and look at the cake.....the bride made the decision that they would cut the cake "early" and then the server who was the neighbor dismantle the cake for cutting and serving and then they (the neighbor and who ever else it was) move the table for the dancing.....
Now, what I am wondering is, "IF" the neighbor and so so moved that table earlier before the cake cutting, does the blame (and hopefully this did not happen) if the cake toppled due to them moving the table, is it my fault if the cake toppled?? I asked my hubby about this and he told me, that once I had set the cake and table up, it was out of my hands from that point on. That I completed my service to the bride and the contract was met in full.
And that if the neighbor did this, and the cake became a catastrophe, then it falls on the neighbor and if the bride decides she wants her $$ back, to then tell her to get it from the neighbor, which is the brides cousin...And if the bride tells me that " I" ruined her cake on her day, to show her the pics of the cake that I took after I set everything up....and remind her that I am already going to do her a anniversary cake for free and remind her that I DID cut her wedding cake price in 1/2....so what is she complaining about. " I " didn't move the table.....the neighbor did. But when I was leaving with my gear, no one was moving the cake table that I could see.......
Now, if this did happened after I left, I didn't get any phone calls so far,,,so everything must have gone smoothly...otherwise I would have gotten a call at least from the neighbor right?????

Ok, first comment, is I would not want a cake table set up anywhere where there is a risk of someone knocking into it, as in on or near the dance floor or near the head table where there was not enough traffic space. However having said that, I would have told the bride this wasn't a good spot unless this would be removed before any dancing took place. After all, it is her final decision and you set up after you have voiced any concerns and that is it.
At this point, the cake is set up and unless it topples because it was not set up properly, it really isn't your problem. If the table collapses because the table itself was not sturdy, that is the hotel or reception hall's problem and up to them to make good.
If someone is fool enough to ever, ever, move a cake table once a cake is set up on it, it is their problem, not yours, not ever. A cake set up already on a table should never, ever be moved. So once it is there, it is there and that is it.
So my answer is, no it is not your problem, your hubby is absolutely correct.
Where it gets iffy, is if you hear your cake has collapsed. Well this could be the decorator's fault if the cake was not level, or sunk, or wasn't supported or dowelled correctly, that is true. Or someone could collide with the table and cake and you could get the blame even though it was not your fault, it would sometimes be a difficult thing to prove. It would also be hard for you to prove that a cake table was or was not moved after you leave the hall. So perhaps you should incorporate into your contract a line about the customer agreeing the cake was stable and intact and have her sign off on it before you leave the hall.

The fact that the set up was fine before you left and the bride saw the cake in good condition...then your job was done. Anything after that would not be your responsibility. And I am positive if anything had gone wrong then you would have gotten a phone call by now!!! Don't worry...you did a great job!
wow, that was pretty nice of you to cut her price in half AND do her anniversary cake.
you were paid to make her cake set it up and that's all. whatever happens after that is not your responsibility or else you would have to take out "cake decorating insurance"!!
Maybe in addition to all of the other "cover our...backsides" steps we obviously have to take to protect ourselves as cake baker/decorators, we should have a "sign-off" form prepared for the bride or immediate family member, stipulating that the cake was delivered and set up in good condition. That, along with photos should eliminate any further worries about what happens after we leave them.
In fact, this form wouldn't have to be just for weddings, it should cover any cake delivered to the person who ordered it. Janice
It is definitely not your problem. The cake was setup and delivered in perfect condition. You have your photos to prove it. I wouldn't stress too much about the cake. You've done your part. As for your neighbor it sounds like she is really out to get you. Seems like she would think of anything to destroy your reputation. Don't worry too much about her. In the end she will get whats coming to her. God does not like ugly.

My hubby told me to not worry, otherwise someone would have called me by now..and to also not worry about the "crone" down the street, he said to me that she is prob jealous that she can't decorate or is bored who knows.....
What I was thinking of was that when the bride has the second meeting to finalize everything, I would mention to her that after I deliver and set up and I take my pics, then my contract with her is done. There for, meaning if the cake should come to a catastrophe, it is not on my part, that I do go to great lengths to ensure a stable cake. I do mention about the dowel rods that are in the cakes because I don't want one of her guests to chew on a stick, and that I remind the bride to remind the server to pull the dowel rods out of the cake as she gets to them from cutting. I re-interate this in my brides letter too....
I've heard from many sources that it's essential to get "product liability insurance" in the first place. A lot of wedding venues won't even let a baker come in who isn't licensed and insured. I called my insurance company, and they explained that their policy would cover any material or bodily damage to others (like if you knock over the cake table and the bride's priceless heirloom vase breaks, or if someone gets sick, etc), damage to the product itself, and some other things. They quoted the premium at around $250 a year.
I think it would definitely be worth it to have insurance, to cover a situation like yours. If someone, heaven forbid, actually tried to sue you, it would be a lot better to cough up $250 up front, than whatever crazy amount they demand, right? And, I agree that your contract should state that once you deliver and set up the cake, your job is done and it's out of your hands.
