I have the hardest time making my icing look smooth on my cakes. I don't know if I am doing something wrong or just impatient. And just when I do get it smooth I don't think its smooth enough and I then jack it up completely. That and does the crumbcoat have to be smooth as well to make the top coat spread on easier.
If you have any tips for me to try, thank you! icon_cry.gif

You must try the "upside down method" instructions located in the articles section. Perfect every time!!

I swear by the VIVA paper towel method. Let your BC sit for about 5 - 10 minutes on your cake, lay a VIVA paper towel on it, and smooth over with your hand. I works great! I've even made a special trip to the store while making a cake just to get some because I ran out.
Also, I usually smooth my crumbcoat...not perfect, but just to get the bumps or rough spots out. It seems to help in the long run, but I'm not sure if it's necessary or not.
