I Think I May Have Cracked The Sugarveil Recipe......maybe
Baking By Somethin-Sweet Updated 21 Sep 2015 , 6:22pm by ChrystysCreations
I just happen to have a bag of the Sugarveil Mix ... here are the ingredients:
sugar
dried egg whites
maltodextrin
cornstarch
xanthangum
Stir 10-12 tsp. boiling water into 1/2 C SugarVil mix and beat for 4 minutes until glossy and smooth.
Red hot....I am going to try your recipe...thanks....I'll post my results....
BUT...
I just want to say, that amazing as they make it seem...Sugarveil did not work for me. I have posted this before. I think I'm pretty capable in the kitchen. I bought the powder, followed instructions to a tee, 3 times. I kept getting a very frothy liquid that actually turned yellow in the bag after a day.
I wrote to the company and they suggested I tried again. I did....and I was very careful....no dice.
I have read forums where people have had success....maybe it was me? Maybe I got a bad batch? Who knows....but this was my experience.
I've seen your cakes before, and if you're having trouble with it, then I'm scared to try it! This is intriguing though. The sugar bride is something to look at, but there's just something "un" edible about a sugarveil bodice on a real person...just me. BUt, it could take popping out of a cake to a whole new level...hmmm.

[quote="redhotmomof3"]Oops! Sorry crp7- thought I had done that- must have been on another forum! Here it is.......
3 egg whites
1Tbsp Cream of Tartar
2lbs Powder Sugar
1 pkg Gelatin (dissolved in a little bit of water)
2 cups MM (melted)
Are you using real egg whites or powdered and is the gelatin knox or great lakes or are you using JELLO? I purchased a package of sugar veil at the convention Sunday and it should be coming soon. I will try this recipe and see if the two of them are similar.
Yes, I used real egg whites and knox gelatin......
Sorry for no pictures yet- I am in the process of packing up to move-

What convention are you refering to?? I hope its not one that I missed
The ICES (International Cake Exporation Society) in Dallas, Tx. I had a ball and learned a lot of new techniques. To get more information go to ICES.org.
Thanks for all the experimentation with this recipe! I think the sugarveil looks cool, especially if it actually works! I can imagine a lot of uses for it! I really hope your recipe works and will try it out as soon as I can!
I'm anxoius to see posts from you and others that are trying it out, and maybe even tweaking the recipe to perfection!
Hi
I'm new to this site and was just reading what you had to say about the SugarVeil. My husband bought me the unit for Christmas and it is really amazing. I wish they would have included a really thick book with many ideas of how to use it.If anyone has any questions about it, let me know and I will be happy to answer them if I can!

I too have ordered this system and I'll post pics and my fumbling as I come about them.
I've written down the recipe to try this weekend after finals (yuk!) and my dh and I will scuplt with it. Has anyone else (other than redhotmamaof3) tried this yet? Could we scuplt with this in replacement of fondant or gumpaste?? Does it dry hard?? I am so excited to try this!!
I loved the wedding gown in Sugarveil, painting the naked lady sure makes it a seller!! Why didn't they do a choclate tux version???
Okay, does anyone know the final result of this post? Did redhotmomof3 experiment herself into a copycat version of SugarVeil successfully? I'd like to try this if it works. Does anyone know?
TIA
I'm still wondering what happened with this. I have never found the time to experiment myself.
I'm curious also. I just won the sugarveil dvd and a bag of their mix at a local Day of Sharing but not the gun. I found the gun at Michels for $14.99 and am anxious to try it soon. I know there are others who have posted sugarveil type recipes to try too.
just went to the website, pretty amazing stuff, cant wait to use it. Its amazing what you can do with it. On the site it shows you how you can even put it on a printing stamp machine and stamp out your design. It seems to be user friendly, which I like. Keep us posted on your use with it.

REALLY?? I am so not buying that $150 gun, but I will buy the $15.00 one! Do you have a link to that product??? Michael's is here in town, but I've never seen the gun....maybe it's in the paint section, and not in the cake decorating section?
I gave this a try, I had a few issues...first, since I didn't know how much water to disolve the gelatin in, I just guessed. Unfortunately, my gelatin didn't disolve. I put the first 3 items in the mixer as stated but it was so dry, after 4 mintues my mixer quit becuase I the mixute clumped together. I had to add water to get a smooth mixture closer to royal icing.
In the end, I got a decent tasting icing with globs of undisloved gelatin that piped fairly well when the tip wasn't clogged with gelatin. However, it dried quickly and didn't stay stretchy.
I don't know if this was a result of my gelatin debacle or what but I think I'm just going to order some sugarveil so i can compare to the actual thing.

Since your post appeared on page 4, I think maybe there isn't a page 5 yet--otherwise, yours wouldn't be on page 4, asking about something on the next page--unless you're prescient?
But, then, you would have known that I would say this.
(Sorry, I'm a bit slaphappy right now!)
You'll notice that this thread begins in '06 and has posts thru April '07. The first post after Apr 07 is March 29, 08 (after the CC crash). I'd bet you my entire bank account that the "missing" page five means that there were posts on it between Oct 07-Mar '08, the great CC crash, and those posts were lost in the crash. In any thread with lost posts, the last page (or more) is corrupted; the page still shows up but the data is lost. If more people continue to post NOW, their posts will eventually grow the thread into a legitimate p5 and the corrupted page will get booted to p6.
Did that make any sense??
The annoying thing is if you get email notifications, the email ALWAYS boots you to the last page of a thread, which is (as we now know) corrupted, so you have to manually track down the beginning of the thread and flip thru the pages to find the current posts. Did that make any sense??!
Yeah, too bad it's almost impossible to find my post though
A hint (for anyone actually manages to read my post): if you are getting notifications for corrupted threads...rather than click the (dead) link, just go to your Watched Topics and start from the beginning.
OK, so this is post 15 which should finish off page 4. If someone makes 1 more post after this, will that let page 5 show up?
I have to work one more day to finish my work week off, then I hope to play with this some myself. I would like to do a Halloween cake with spider webs made from sugarveil. I don' usually like to put things on my cakes which couldn't be cut through and served with the cake but if this works well for me, I may make an exception this once.
