I am starting to bake from home and would like to solicit the local restaurants in my area to see who they use for their pastries and hopefully peak their interest with some of my samples.....

Has anyone ever done this and what was your approach? How many samples should I bring (my "menu" consists of 6-8 different items right now)? How often would you deliver (3-4 days a week)? Your input is greatly appreciated!

I'm planning on doing the same thing to "kick start" my business. At the moment there are three restaurants in my area that I would consider soliciting. I would check out your local restaurants that you've eaten at, see what their desserts look like and approach management. Before you do that, do you have liability insurance and are you a licensed home baker? The insurance question is sure come up in conversation and licensed home baking may not be as much of an issue. Several questions that I've considered.

not to burst your bubble, but most restaurants won't buy from you if you don't bake out of a licensed and inspected kitchen. some will, but most won't.

Well, I finally mustered up the courage to call the local restaurants in my area to see about dropping off my samples for them to try. I think I may have some geniune interest! Out of 10 restaurants, 4 are allowing me to stop by next week to see what I can offer. Keep your fingers crossed!......now I must make sure my "menu" sparks their interest. My goal is to "wow" their taste buds, but not be too over the top (2 of the 4 are diner-type spots).

After dropping off samples and following up to those I have solicited, I have had some very positive feedback. They all seem to like what I had to offer! I am still playing phone tag with a few to see where this may take me, but I am very encouraged from their response. If this works, my dream may actually start to come true! I hope to know more by next week.........I will keep you posted!
