Stumbled on this site looking for a mower cake for Ge. It posts different cake. While the person does not claim to make them it is stated at the bottom to let her know if you see your own cake so she can list your name. Some neat cakes there...some familiar ones too. So bakers...go claim your cake
DUH is Me ....Here's the link:

that's crazy........I can't imagine just posting a ton of cakes and then saying......hey if I snagged one of yours let me know!! This person must be really confident they can recreate them.....or are they not selling cake??? What is the purpose of this web site???
People are going to be disappointed based on the ones this decorator really did... doesn't measure up in my opinion. This is rude to use other's pictures on your own sales site!

I was thinking the same thing! I could only dream of doing a cake as well as Debbie Brown--at the first attempt!! If I was to do one, it would be a practice cake for my kids first. Then if I did a decent job, then I would post a pic of what I did and say I can do it. I just find it odd putting pictures from well known decorators--their pictures to boot--on a personal site that is supposed to be a place where one is to show off their talents to sell their own cakes. And then to ask others to claim pics of their cakes to get proper credit--well where the heck did this person get them in the first place? It is nice that she is giving credit to those who deserve it, I've seen a few companies fail in that department, but, I don't know, it is just plain weird to me.
What cracks me up is the non-chalant way she says, "Oh, if you see your cake here, let me know so I can give you credit." I think you are supposed to ask permission first!
Samsgranny - you're right, but she's probably going by the old saying: "It's easier to ask forgiveness than permission"!
Although I think she is a better cake decorator than myself, I can't help but wonder if she's setting some pretty high standards for her business. I believe on her home page she says her business is named Sugar Creek Parties & Cakes.
I am impressed with her self-confidence. I wish I had a little of that with my cake decorating. I daydream of doing a cake business.
Spottydog, I just wanted to say thank you for the lead to that page. I love the cakes. I am always looking for cake "ideas" designs. I would be flattered if I found one of my cakes there.
I make note that this person has a lot of other people's cakes on the website, but the person's own cakes on another page are not done with as much skill. I would hate to think that ...person .... was attempting to pass off the work of others as his/her own.
My son and I have often discussed the need for watermarks on my website cake photos. I imagine someone somewhere has used another cake decorator's photo and claimed it as his/her own. The proof would be in whether the person would be able or unable to duplicate the work.
The internet can be a big bad place filled with dishonest people. But it can also be a safe haven among friends, like here on CC. Let's keep watching each other's backs
By the way...I never mind if someone uses my work as inspiration. But I do know however that the skills of many others here are so much better than mine.
I hate to disappoint her but stating who made the actual cakes pictured does not give her the right to use them. The actual photographs of the cake made by eg. debbie brown is copyright protected and cannot be used without her express permission. I am positive she would not give it as she has her own website. Debbie could sue her for copyright violation. She can certainly make an identical cake herself and post her own picture, but she is not allowed to use other's photos.
Huh...when I click on the pictures to enlarge them, I get sent to a site where sponsored links are gay bear sex, porn, blah blah blah...It happened when I clicked on the three shower pictures (last pics)...what is up with that? My computer also tells me it is blocking a pop-up ad...
OMG! I got sent to the same page with gay bear etc. Could it be she is using that site to sponsor her "wholesome" cake site? Crazy! I am glad nothing of mine is on her cake site.
Who would look at gay bear porn anyway?!? Is that like teddy bears in compromising positions? Inquiring minds want to know (but not bad enough to explore the sites. Ew)!
OMG that's crazy!
I agree with keira about the copyright violation.....you can't use photos even if you mention the original creator!
I keep trying to decode it, along the lines of davinci code which can you tell I saw last week? I tried anagrams etc... didn't get anything and maybe it's time I went to bed here!
Even if one, or All, of my cakes were on there, there is no way that I would send them my personal information. It's websites like this that assist in Identity Theft!
Theresa
it is bizarre. And any disclaimers should be at the top of the page, not the bottom. Not that she should be posing them anyway. Likely she is just ill-informed.
Boy, I was going gunning for Party-Bear to see if any of my cakes were there. Many people here at CakeCentral already know my take on just making works of cake art copying another baker and not giving that person the credit let alone posting copyrighted pictures of works of art that are also copyrighted without getting permission and posting the creators name! (Undergraduate degree in studio photography here so this really burns me.) If it were me, I would be livid and take her immediately to the nearest court!!!!!
P.S. What this person is doing is ILLEGAL!
Hmmm, lets see I think I did all these cakes - NOT! I think this is just horrible! People work really hard on these cakes and to have someone else post them on their site - without prior permission is not right! I think this person needs to rethink their business. I didn't see any posted with her/his name on them. Makes you wonder do they really do cakes?
Not to mention what she is doing to those poor bears...................What kind of a sicko could even think of something like that!!!!!!!!!
I just read the bottom of page, where it say's they don't wish to take credit for those designs. Don't know if I'm right or wrong, but it struck me to mean that the "designs" were taken from names that were listed, not that they didn't actually do the cakes themselves, just copied the design for the cake. Kind of like we do here, when we see something we really like, and borrow the idea. Sooo, I don't know, that's just what I took it to mean in my opinion
It almost looks like someone hacked her site. IF you look around she does have legitimate links on there. It's just when you click a picture it takes you to some undesirable links. I wonder if that's what happened.
No matter what her affiliations with...er...bears, what she is doing is a violation of copyright and not legal. You own the rights to your photos, internet or not, and by lifting them and saving them without your permission, she is violating copyright law. Even if you don't explicity say 'this photo copyright Mary Smith 2006' it's still legally your photo.

ETA hit post too soon...
My advice would be, tell her how she is violating copyright law and tell her she must take the photos down within 24 hours. Also, I would call the BBB about her business and warm them that she is using other people's cakes to advertize her own business.
I have to say that when I posted this topic I didn't realize what exactly the outcome would be. I had no idea that it may have been illegal or anything like that(the website). My intention was to just put it out there for anyone to check and see if there cakes were one of thiers so that they would be able to get credit where it was due.
I apologize for starting any issues that could have been avoided.
Lisa
Lisa...You don't need to apologize...you didn't do anything wrong.
