You should. Everyone has a myspace page these days. I have one and I love it.

My kids told me I "had" to get a myspace for my cakes. I told them my pics were already on Flickr (like they had ALSO suggested!). So I let my 14-year old set up a page for me.

I get all kinds of emails that I have (stupid!) messages from people I don't know leaving me info that has nothing to do with anything I'm interested in. So now when I get one, I tell my 14 year old to check it out for me. So far to me, it's a big junkmail box.

When she is on her myspace page (and we have very strict rules for her to be on there! Her dad is on there all the time to make sure she's following them.), she will read me something that someone posted on her page. I asked "you mean anyone can post anything on YOUR page? Can you delete it?" She told me she can't delete it but she puts a message up saying she did not post nor does she agree with that post.

I can't say I'm enamored with the idea where some idiot can post anything they want.

Plus I've had ZERO business from myspace ... something my kids SWORE would be rolling in if I'd just "get with the times!"

Yeah. Right.

I agree with Debi... I have a Xanga page so that my in-laws can keep up with my baby without me cluttering their email boxes with megs of pix... within the first 36 hours 2 young boys came on my page and started cussing and calling me names and being incredibly digusting. I was mortified because everyone can see those comments, and my in-laws are all pastors and people of religious appointments. I was SO upset!! So now, all of my posts are what they call 'protected'. A person can only see them if I have added them to my acceptable user list, so it's not like I can get business off of that site. But... that's not why I have it, so, it all comes out in the wash! icon_wink.gif Just be advised that any ignorant jerk can come on your page and leave disgusting, pornographic messages.

indydebi,
I have a myspace page, and since you kind-of admitted that you don't know too much about it, I thought I'd let you know the following:
1. only your 'friends' (people you have accepted to be your friends) can post comments on you.
2. You can delete ANY comment someone leaves you.
3. Anyone CAN leave you a comment on your photos or videos - I think
4. And for added security you can make your page 'private' being only your accepted friends can even view your page.

You said your 14-year-old is on myspace, so I thought you might want to know this. If you want to know how to do some of this and more about myspace (that could help with your kid) I would be happy to tell you more - just PM me.

ccr, thanks for that info! I will keep you in mind!

She does have her space marked private, so it REALLY is irritating that these comments are being left by her school mates who she originally deemed "ok" to let in. I was proud of her when she told me she deleted one kid as a "friend" due to the postings that were being left.

My quandry is when they convinced me to set it up, it needed to be public so as to give acces to cake pics, but then I also have to deal with the other issues, too.

They just keep saying, "Oh, mom....you're just old!" icon_lol.gif

Gotcha! Yeah, I'm sure it's irriating that these school 'friends' leave comments like that.

But yes, feel 100% percent free to pm any questions you may have, I would be happy to help in any way I can.

I just called her in here and asked her about deleting messages. SHe said, "I TOLD you that yes I can delete them" then rolled her eyes like only a teenager can! I said, "So why was I so upset because I thought you were stuck with those comments on your page?" She rolled her eyes again and said, 'I've no idea...probably because you're old!" (my gosh, WHERE does she get that mouth from?) icon_rolleyes.gif

So I AM the myspace idiot here! ccr, thanks for the info so I could confirm it with her! thumbs_up.gif

Don't feel bad Debi. My daughter set up my page and I am lost at what to do with it. I have all my cake pics on Photobucket with a link on our family web page. My SIL is an over the road truck driver and he wanted to Im and I hadn't a clue how to set up the myspace IM. I have to wait for my daughter to come and show me.

You can also set your settings on there to where you approve your comments before they show up on your page. That is how I have my comments set. That way if someone makes a comment that I don't approve of, it never shows up on my page. So far I've never had to do that though... HTH.

OMG....just like everything else, its SOOOO addicting! My kids also suggested I let them create a page & should do so myself since all my nieces & nephews have one & that would be a great way to keep up with them. So I agreed to let them, & I made one for myself. Mine isnt dedicated to cakes, but I do have my pictures of my cakes in my albums. I use mine not only to keep in touch w/my family members, but to track down old classmates! I have been on a mission to find them for like the last 2 years & I have never hit the jackpot better! I love myspace! So if you create a page & can figure it all out, its a wonderful thing if you have computer time...lol Im off & on mine throughout the day & evening. But then again, I am a net junkie...lol thumbs_up.gif
My page url is http://www.myspace.com/texmo10egirl stop by any time! My profile is set to private so unless you have my email addy, you can not request to be my friend, & it is [email protected].
If you would like to set one up & dont know how, feel free to PM as Im a pro at it now...lol Not to mention my son has spent numerous hours playing with it!
Enjoy!

Yea, myspace! The majority of people on myspace are 10-18 yrs old, how are you going to get any business from that? My neighbor's daughters are on my friend's list and I've been on their page and been absolutely shocked! Did you know there is now a monitored myspace for kids? Its something like kidscom.com, the same as myspace, but more kid oriented. All content/images are approved first, they monitor the messages, posts, chatrooms. The chatrooms close at 10pm. It has games, etc geared for the younger set. AND parents have to approve their kid joining in the first place. It was in the local Family magazine this month, too.
I wonder if there is a CC group to join from myspace, or perhaps someone should make a CC profile, and then we can all "friend" Cake Central! [/list]

I'm a total myspacer! Between here and there, I have to pry myself away. I go through total withdrawls. I feel my hands shaking, eyes twitching and have to sit down at least a couple times a day for at least 10 or 15 minutes to get my fix in. Sometimes I go on huge computer junkie binges. Today has been one of those. But in my defense, I had a busy weekend with very little computer time......

Truth be known, there are way many more adults on myspace these days than kids and unless the parents of 10 yr olds don't know what their kids are doing they wouldn't be on myspace as the bottom age limit is 14. When it first started it was a very young crowd, but that just isn't the case these days. My daughter's page is also monitored closely, but is private and all comments, including photo comments must be approved. I think it's a lot better than 50 phone calls to the house every night for simple things that can be answered quickly with a comment or message.

edited to say-Bradymom-your page is very cute!

I have a myspace that's more to keep up with friends and I have a cake gallery on it so my friends can see my cakes. I do not expect to get any business off of it because I have the settings very very very strictly set

1. You have to know my last name or e-mail address to even ASK to be my friend.

2. I have it set that I get to approve every single things that can or might be posted on my account, including comments. I have some of my husband's former employees from our old theatre on there and they're under 18 and (I'd like to think they are...) innocent, so I don't allow my older friends to post anything racy or suggestive.

3. I have everything set to private, including my pictures. The only picture a random Joe-Schmoe can see on my site is the main picture for my page.

4. I also go through and periodically delete those people who I just don't communicate with. That's what I use it for... I'm too old to be in a popularity contest with who has more friends.

There are many kids on it under 14, it isn't hard to lie about your age to get on to it if you really want to. I know both my neighbors daughters are 8 and 9, and they have myspaces. Thankfully one of them is monitored very closely by her mother, the other is monitored by her sisters (and me). They even have a place to report underage users.

I just removed my daughter's myspace page. I had a few rules she was supposed to abide by:

1. I had to have the password.
2. She had to use her true age (she's 15).
3. Her account had to be set to private and require someone knowing her last name or e-mail address to contact her.
4. I had to be on her friend list so I could see the bulletins she posted.

She broke one of the rules last week (after having it for the past 2 years), and the MySpace profile went bye-bye. She was not very happy - but now she's not on the computer for several hours every night. icon_biggrin.gif
