Hi -
I'm planning on making cookies for my daughter's class for a party, and there is one boy who is, I guess, allergic to milk, so I want to make sure he can eat what I make (I feel so bad when everyone else is eating a cupcake and he's not, cause I didn't know). So, my question is, does dairy free include butter? Anyone know specifics about this allergy, and what more I should avoid besides the obvious milk?

Use Earth Balance Vegan Butter. It tastes the same as butter. I know because I cannot have milk/butter/cheese. It sucks because I
m french!

My daughter has a milk allergy and we use Flieschman's unsalted for baking not the regular. Also most chocolate chips have milk in them too.

As a mom of a child with food allergies I greatly appreciate it when anyone is considerate to try to include my daughter. I don't expect it but it's nice when it happens.

You may want to see if you can contact the parents of the child. I have a family member that is allergic to milk, but not all milk products (cheese, butter, etc.) There may also be something they use that they can suggest to you. I am sure they wouldn't mind since you are going the extra mile to make sure their child is involved also. Plus finding the information out now will help throughout the years as your child and theirs grows up together.

As a mother with three kids who are all allergic to dairy, eggs, and peanuts, I just want to say that your thoughtfulness will surely be greatly appreciated by the parents as well as the child. I wish all parents would think about kids that way!

I think the best advice is to contact the parent. Each kid and their allergy is different.

There are different degrees of the allergy and that affects how much the child can tolerate (if any at all). My oldest two have built up a tolerance to the point where they can have BC made with milk and not break out, the youngest can eat a tiny bite and break out in hives. There are also different types of dairy..are they allergic to the milk or just lactose, for example.

I could go on forever when it comes to kids with allergies. Before we knew our oldest son was allergic to eggs he ended up in the ER...that was the scariest drive in my life! We now carry epi-pens with us just in case! I think it is best to talk to the parents. Jodie

I just had to make a cake for a boy who is allergic to milk, eggs, and nuts (inc. soy - which meant I couldn't use it as a substitute for a lot of things). Definitely check with the parents to see if it is possible to include him in the goodies. I had found a good cake recipe here and I have a good sugar cookie recipe that he was able to use but I can't use the RI on them due to the egg/meringue factor.

Like JRAE33 and penny77 mentioned, call the parent if you can.

I do this all the time. For baking, and making icing you can usually use crisco unless there is a soy allergy. For replacing the milk, you can use Soy or Rice milk. There are a lot of good recipe's out there.

There are several Allergy web sites out there that can help you, if you want to do little reasearch before you call the parent.

Usually Dairy allergies will include all dairy products, but sometime not. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Here are a few sites to visit:

If you need some recipes, I can help you there too. Just PM me.

I bake for people with the following allergies a combo and some more constrained:

Gluten, Daily, Milk, Chocolate, Peanuts, Almonds, Nuts in General, Eggs, Egg Whites, Soy, Banana's, Non sugar Sweeteners, Diabetics and a few others I am blanking out on right now. If I ever have all these people here at the same event, they get 2 or 3 recipes picks of treats that will take care of most of them. I label everything. You would be amazed how kids learn really fast what they can and cannot eat.

Good Luck.

You could alway wuse the smart source butter replacement that is definately dairy free. You just have to be careful of what exactly the person is alergic to. My family has serve allergies to mild protein so you really have to look at each individual ingredient in everything you use. No whey especially.

Good luck with it. It's hard but there are recipes out there. Look in CC's recipes for dairy free. They are good.

Thank you to everyone who responded; I'm so sorry I didn't get back here to check; I never get my email notifications anymore, so I wasn't notified of the responses. You guys had great ideas; calling the mom would probably be the best thing to do, cause you are right, there are different degrees of allergies!
