Some have used the Chocolate Transfer way too. You use the CT for the wings, and let them dry. Then pipe the chocolate body and "prop" the wings up against it to dry to the body. Here is a link to CTs if you are interested in doing it that way. The CT tutorial begins on page 2, this one done by a fellow CC member, Cali4dawan! HTH some, Jen

I make them out of smashed jolly ranchers. Look at my pix -- the flower pot cake was done using that technique.

I made butterflies using the colorflow method with RI. If you do it that way, just make sure you have enough time for them to dry. Mine had a little less than 24 hours, and it wasn't quite enough.

You can see them on my website, under single layer cakes. They're on the 50th Anniversary Cake

I used gumpaste and small butterfly cookie cutters, let them dry then used icing to make the body part and attached them to wires... it is in my gallery the baby shower cake.

kbochick, what do you mean not enough time? they look great. I was going to try RI to make them the next time. I made mine with gumpaste and then iced on top for the colors.

Can you use the same printer for edible images and with regular ink also by just changing cartridges or is there ink residue left behind?

I read on here you cannot use the same printer=( Due to the possible cross contamination. If you do a search, you will find more info on it, but the overall opinions was no.

pretzels, dipped in melted frosting and then dipped in colored sugar can work. Each pretzel is one wing. I guess it depends on the look you are trying to acheive.

Since I've had a few requests on how I did the jolly rancher butterflies, I found the thread and will post the link here: http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-decorating-ftopict-80361-butterflies.html

I've also learned since then to keep them from melting, brush the finished product with confectioners glaze. I haven't tried this yet, so I don't know how well it works, but I have faith in the gal who told me about it. icon_biggrin.gif

Thanks! Some of them were still a bit mushy in the middle, and I actually lost several wings because they weren't dry enough when I took them off the wax paper. Good thing I made extras! I put the ones that didn't die coming off the paper in the toaster oven on warm for a little while, and that helped.

You can also try putting them on a cookie sheet in the oven overnight with JUST the light on -- that's how I dry mine frequently. Or you can use the food dehydrator -- I love mine! icon_biggrin.gif

I have used a cutter and then placed in flower former to bring the wings up a bit, but would like a better way.
