Hello! I'm a newbie and I'm making a cake Friday with fish on it. I bought both some gel dyes and powdered dyes yesterday. I haven't taken the time yet to play with them and see which I like better. I have used gel before though. But is the powered ones just as good? I got the powered because they looked like they might be closer in color to what I want. I was wondering what your opinion is on these?

They both work well, but if you use powder, you need to be sure to let the icing sit for several hours or overnight, then re-mix it. The color will continue to dissolve and get stronger for several hours.

I have both. I like the powder for coloring dryed gumpaste pieces. I have tried using the powder for coloring but I did not let it set long enough. I do use the gels all the time.
