usaribbon.gif I work fulltime as an Accounts Payable clerk for the City of Lebanon. I also have two wonderful boys-Tyler,6 and Tater, 2. I usually have 2-3 cakes a week and have been averaging one wedding cake a month. I am also a fulltime student attending night classes at Dury Unversity and I am in my final year graduating next August (2006) with my Bachelor's in Business Administration.

I work at a no-kill animal shelter coordinating low-cost spays and neuters. Cake decorating is one of my outlets from the stress of work. For now, I only do them for friends and family. It's a great hobby at this point. It would be great to make some cash, though.

Well cakerer who knows how long it takes to make a cake. Some cakes are easy and would take an hour some would take 10 to 20 hours. It depends on what is required. I do it because i like the creative outlet. Put this way I can get paid for 1 hour of my work(apart form cake making) what it takes to make a cake!!
I have looked at it and I think I would take about 5 hours to make the average cake. I look at it as cash in my pocket. I dont need to pay for a baby sitter and I get paid when otherwise I would be doing nothing. I dont think you do it to make a lot of money.

At this time my current Real job is a county 9-1-1 Telecommunicator I work 6 days on 3 days off steady midnights, when time permits I am also a Emergency services instructor teaching firefighters and EMTs both Firefighting and rescue skills, I have a part time job as a Firefighter-EMT, and I also have a part-time job as a Substitute Crossing Guard. When I am not working or at home with my wife and our 3 cats I also am a Volunteer Firefighter and EMT with my local fire Department and Rescue squad. My in-laws got me into cake decorating by giving me a basic Wilton set as a Christmas gift, I had been mostly baking and cooking pies and other meals until then. Now I use cake decorating as a way to relax 1 cake takes up most of my days off but its worth it. I am hoping to get a job as a career Firefighter-EMT as that will give me more time off to spend with my wife and more time for decorating cakes.

Connie515 I know how it feels to try a long time to have children; my wife and I are unable to have children ourselves and are in the long process of adopting. Best of luck in all you do.

I guess it's time to introduce myself and quit hiding! I'm a work at home mother of 2. I do bookkeeping, but my real career is a homemaker and mommy!

I love making cakes. I just do them for friends and family for now, but I would love to have a business someday. For now, I need practice and more practice!

I'll try to post some pictures soon. I promise to start being an active part of this community. I look up to everyone here. All your cakes are so awesome. Any homemade cake is a work of art from the heart! It's sad that many kids today only know a birthday cake as one bought from the grocery store...

Hi Everyone,
I work for a local government agency as a supervisor in our enforcement division. I am a mother of three kids. I always loved to bake and I got into decorating when my oldest daughter was two years old. I took a break for a while and started again about 3 years ago. I have taken Wilton classes and I am also taking classes at a local cake supply shop. I really enjoy being creative and you guys do great work.

I went back to work 4yrs ago at a local retail store. I'm at the customer service counter helping with returns, question and complaints. It can be kinda hard sometimes. Decorating cakes is my "release". I love watching the expression of the person recieving one of my cakes. Not that I think they're very good but of course I'm my own worst critic(sp?). There eyes go really big with there mouth wide open very surprised at how well it turned out. That's one of the best part about decorcating that I love. My dream would be to run my own bakery.

Well, I guess it's not too late to add a bit about myself. I'm a SAHM, but I am also a residential apartment manager. I have three children, ages 5, 7, and 8 (the 5 and 7 byear olds will be turning 6 and 8 very soon). My son is a special needs child (ADHD with Asberger's Syndrome), so I need to be avaliable if I am needed, thus no real outside job. Currently, I fancy myself a bead artist (I specialize in seed beads), but I am now decorating cakes as a form of artistic release.
In my past life, before marriage, I was a LVN and a QC inspector. When I grow up I want to own my own family diner and bakery. I want to call it "A little bit of Mom", or something like that.

I ocassionally do the cakes and people pay me for them, but not very often. I don't really make a profit... I hear profits are bigger profits on wedding cakes... icon_lol.gif

Being in the case business is easier said than done.. You have to invest money, and wait a couple of years before you can really see a profit...

I would rather work for an experienced baker and get a license for vendor and do cakes on the side...

Maybe in the future... icon_cool.gif

Hello Everyone,

I am a stay at home mom of 2. Sometimes 3 if you count my DH. I have not worked since I was pregnant with my first one. I do miss working but now that I like to do cakes, I am glad I don't have a job that cuts into my cake time. Every one over here is sick of cake already because I make them all the time. I don't want to own my one bakery or anything like that I just want to be good at making and decorating them for friends and family.

I am an accounting manager for a major real estate developer. I am a mother of 3 ages 6, 8 &11. I started baking and decorating for friends and family but it seems that word of mouth keeps me baking for many other outside people. I love this site and all the wonderful things everyone has to say...I read it everyday while I'm working, it breaks the monotony(is that how you spell it?)

I am an admin for a large Payroll Company - Funny thing is, I don't know much about payroll. But I have a great steady job that allows me to also work on my cakes.

I started cake decorating because my grandmother gave me all of her old cookbooks, and one was about cake decorating. There was a cute picture of a baby bib cake, and one of my dearest friends was pregnant. I am one of those people who likes to experiment with things. So, I made this cake and everyone loved it. It kinda snowballed from there, and now I make cakes for all of my family, friends and co-workers. I have even gotten several word of mouth orders. Like the wedding cake I am doing next weekend.

I have gotten allot of ideas from this site, and have just started posting. All the advise I have gotten has been great, and everyone seems so nice - Thanksicon_smile.gif

I'm a nurse, and I work for a private family doctor. I just started decorating cakes less than a year ago, and I've had 2 "paying gigs" so far. Me and my bf's dream is to open up a coffee & pastry shop, but that is years and years away, so I'm just having a great time doing cakes for people from time to time.

Wow 50% just do it for friends and family. Thats a lot of work to not make any $$ icon_lol.gif

I am a teacher...elementary reading to be exact. I have always loved to decorate cakes. Growing up I would make the cakes for my family, I think I even made a few of my BDay cakes as well. Now that my life is starting to settle down I've had more time to explore my hobbies. The plan now is to make cakes for a small fee for friends and family. Hopefully I can build up my experience and portfolio and move this into a business. This seems perfect for when I retire (in about 30 more years icon_rolleyes.gif )

I'm an executive assistant. I'd love to be able to do cakes and get paid, but it is impossible to do it legally here and Murphy's Law, I'd get turned in!

I'm a SAHM to twin toddler girls. I really didn't get into it that much until after they were born (or should I say when I was pregnant with them!). I guess it was all about nesting and becoming domestic icon_wink.gif...

i'm 31 years old, and i work as a program assistant at the largest non-governmental cancer research funding agency in canada. i have a bachelors degree in Linguistics, and part-way through my degree i took off a year and went to college for baking. i worked in bakeries until i finished university, when i had to quit because of physical problems and i fell accidentaly into admin work (like most of us do). i am the delighted aunt of 2 nieces and 2 nephews ranging in ages 5 weeks to almost 13 years, and i am owned by a 9-year-old 15-pound orange somali cat (who is the most beautiful creature on the planet).

i do cakes and truffles and other pastries these days sporadically, and have cupboards full of pans and tools that have been laying fallow for years. i really enjoy sharing my baking and decorating experience with the folks on this site; helping people troubleshoot challenges is one of my favourite things.

I'm a SAHM. My little one just turned 2, and my other is 4.5. I started experimenting with cakes for my DD's first birthday. It was a lot of fun, so I started doing them for everyone's birthday.

I am a department of defense government worker who works with the F-15 aircraft - helping to keep freedom free. I started decorating cakes two months ago, and I am doing cakes for family, friends, co-workers. As soon as I think they have had enough free samples, I will start charging...Ching! Ching! I really enjoy it though....
