I am making a cinnamon swirl cake (box mix) but I don't know what kind of filling to put in it. Should I just use the buttercream? HELP!

Would an apple jam/jelly be ok? Has anyone tried to put apples in the middle?

You can make a batch of apple pie filling and simmer it on the stove until the apples soften up. I used this once as a cake filling. Spread a layer of carmel on the cake layer and then spread the apple pie filling on top of the carmel. It was wonderful and would taste great on the cinimmon swirl cake.

Jillycakes,
I have never made an apple pie (I don't like cooked apples). Would I do everything the same as making an apple pie but not put it in the pie, just put it all on the stove and cook it til the apples are soft?

Yes. Just thinly slice or dice your apples (about six) and toss them w/ a mixture of 3/4 cup sugar, 2 T flour, 1/8 t salt, 1 t. cinnamon (I use more than that) and 1/4 t ground nutmeg. Then melt 2 T of butter in a sauce pan, add the apple mixture, bring it to a boil and then let it simmer on low for about 20 minutes - stirring frequently. Then just test it to make sure the apples are soft. You could also add crushed walnuts. If you want to do the carmel, I think the process for making your own using sweetened condensed milk is in the recipe section.

Now I'm salivating!

I would say a cream cheese whipped filling, cream cheese icing, or cinnamon buttercream. Yummy!
