I was about to go cook up some isomalt and cast it in a peice of gumpaste when I realized I had never done this - will the gumpaste melt???
Its a cake for my moms birthday so I was getting all fancy....now I am afraid that since I didnt use pastillage, I am doomed!

I think it will melt. I've never done this technique before BUT I do use isomalt. You'll need to let the isomalt cool a bit on a silpat and THEN put it in the gumpaste IF that is possible. When I "mold" Isomalt I let it get to "pulling" temp which is about 180-200 that should still be fluid enough for you.

i don't know if it can wait till pulling temp.....its a tricky mold I made.

"I" never have, but, then again, who am I? Tell ya what. I took a Pulled Sugar Class at the Wilton School from Laurie Braddock. Sandy Folsom also teaches sugar I THINK. You can pour melted sugar over or around gumpaste no problem. Make sure it is VERY dry or it can dissolve the sugar or make it cloudy from the remaining water in the gumpaste. I usually sand my gumpaste down very smooth before pouring the sugar over or around it. That way you don't get all the little air bubbles. You want the sugar to be about the fluidity of honey and pour it in one spot then let it flow over the gumpaste. This prevents bubbles. hope that helps.
