I've gotten myself into it again! Last October I took on a wedding, doing the catering, groom's cake, bride's cake and all decorations! Now I'm getting ready to do my future mother-in-law's birthday party. I'm on an extremely tight budget and once again have to do all the food, plus the decorations, plus a three tiered cake. Here's where I need the help! I have no clue what to do for decorating the cake. The party has a luau theme, and the cake must be three tiers because they want a chocolate cake, yellow cake and some other cake of my choosing. I want a bright fun cake, but without looking childish or coming off looking like a wedding cake. If anybody has any ideas or pictures, please email me at [email protected] or post a reply here.

Thanks,
Shannon

What about doing some really fun hawaiian type flowers.....like the brightly colored ones you find on some leis....maybe even make a pretzel rod and royal icing palm trees as a topper!! I'll see if I can find some photos to help out!

pineapple, tropical drinks, little paper umbrellas...does any of this help?

Edited to add:
What about airbrush sides of one layer and pipe palm tree outline around the cake in black..like on all the mugs, etc.

How about hitting the fabric store for inspiration. Hawaiian prints should be out now.

sandals, sand....this inspires me! Now I want to make one!!

Thank you guys so much! The idea about the palm tree topper is great! I was also thinking of doing FBCT of hibiscus (I just planted two in my front yard) because I think they are gorgeous.

Just an idea, to go along with the 3 tiered cake also use the mini doll cake pan and make Hawiian Girls decorated in bright colored frostings and flowers.

Also, ham in a pineapple glaze and tropical drinks always helpo set the theme.

Hope that helps a little.

I think it would be gorgeous even if you just used silk flowers...and placed individual ones around each tier.....or even just find some leis (Party City has a great selection of silk flower leis)...and cut it...and wrap one around each layer and then sprinkle some of the flowers around the cake on the table , maybe put a few at the top around the palm trees.

You can change this into a three tier

this one is really cute

You can do something simple and add silk flowers or make royal flowers

Maybe this can get some ideas going. Good luck

This is nice. It was just posted by CakeDesigns in the gallery. You could change the topper to be appropriate for an adult birthday.

Perfect!!! The one from Freed's Bakery is gorgeous. It will have to be altered a little because the cake stand I have is three different heights of a cake plate (hard to describe, but you probably know what I'm talking about). We're getting some of those leis from Party City anyway, so I'll just snatch a few of those to use. I'm also thinking of tinting my frosting on each tier to a different tropical color so I think this cake is going to be gorgeous. Thanks for all the great ideas!
