I have only used wooden dowels. Since straws are so flimsy I would be scared to use one unless it was an emergency.

I've used both, but when I'm really worried I use the dowels. Esp. for the one down the middle of the cake.

I've used both. Straws are alot easier to work with and I have never had a problem with them. Most of the time I will use wooden or plastic dowels on the bottom bigger tiers and straws on the upper smaller tiers. I saw Martha Stewart use straws years ago and thought "no way" but tried it and I like them and like I said I have never had a problem using them. Actually, I think the wooden dowels scare me more than straws!! I use the thick heavy straws.

I don't like the wooden dowels, I use the plastic dowels. I haven't had a problem with them yet. I haven't tried the big straws.

I use lollipop sticks per Toba G. She recommends one per inch size of the pan. It can be a lot of sticks, BUT they dont' take up much cake at all. I like that I can clip them easily with dykes.
