I need to know the tricks on getting your icing colors bright. I use the wilton gel colors but the never seem to be bright enough. I am doing a baby einstein cake and I need vibrant primary colors, red, blue, yellow, green, purple. Is there a certain type of coloring that works best or what? Thank you so much for your help!!! thumbs_up.gif

I use Americolors and they are great! You can get them here on CC! thumbs_up.gif

Does your icing have butter in it? That may cause some of the dullness with the color. I find using an all shortneing recipe keeps the icing bright white and you can see true color.

I have found Americolor works the best for me. To get really vibrant colors sometimes you have to just use more color until it's where you want it!

Does the Americolor have the bad taste that Wilton has when you use a lot to get the colors bright or dark enough?

Check around though...at christmas time I used a cheapie green color that my mom bought for me from the grocery store and it made the absolute prettiest Christmas green ever. So try everything (although I normally use the americolor as well and I do love it!) Hope this helps!

Americolor is my choice. No toothpicks either!

Thank you for all of the help, but there is still a problem. I have to make the cake Friday so that does not leave time for the purchase and shipment of the Americolor. I have almost bought them numerous times but I didn't know if they would be good. I guess i will go with the all shortening recipe and see what I get! Thanks again everyone!!

Do use Crisco, to get your colors brighter, also if you color your icing a hot pink and then add the red, you should get a bright color without the bad taste. Same thing with black, use dark brown first. It helps so you don't have to put half a jar of coloring in. Good luck!!
