sorry aligotmatt, the baby/alien thing is not working for me.

I love the colors and design of the rest of the cake because my tastes are as untraditional as they come. If I had a baby shower, I would have untraditional colors as well. For instance, my wedding cake was a dark red, instead of the traditional white.

Even me, with my regular break from tradition would not like the baby/alien thing going on at the top of the cake.

Here is another vote for losing the amputee body and keeping the baby. Although your friend might like it, are you considering what others at the shower might think? If you are doing this to get more orders, they may not come. If you don't care what they think and know your friend will love it, then more power to you. I'd keep the cake as is, if that's the case.

I think you gave the mommy a great boob job.

Wish I could make me some like that. icon_cry.gif

Whatever the case may be you did an awesome job with your cake.

You can't please all of the people all of the time. icon_smile.gif

I would go with removing the Mommy completly.

Just have the baby coming out of the ruffles kind of like coming out of a Cabbage Patch.

I did not look at the gum paste as flesh, I knew it was a dress but it is still un-natural.

I agree that the guest will be wispering to each other.

Alright, it was supposed to be a surprise for the mom, but I decided to go ahead and email it to her to see what she thought. Just to not freak her out. I know all the people that will be at the shower (except for 2) almost all of them have/are customers of mine so they know my style and know that wouldn't just put a crazy topper on any cake, I follow instructions...

Anyhow, this is what I sent her. I put the sign on, added some pink circles to kind of lighten up the cake, pink flowers...

ETA: She vetoed the popping baby! Now we have this

The picture that I'm looking at looks like the baby doesn't have hands with fingers. Please give the poor baby fingers.

The baby has thumbs that are seperated and I used a toothpick to make lines to indicate additional fingers, but it's certainly not a sculpted mini hand

Hee hee! Baby popping out of belly! LOL!

Like girl popping out of a cake - too funny!

Now I have to read the other posts! icon_smile.gif

Okay - read the other posts, love the cake you ended up with, but the other would have really cracked me up if someone gave it to me.

Super job all around!

I think that is an awesome idea When I was pregnant with my kids, some days it felt like they were gonna do that. I think its an awesome topper. I would be thrill to get a cake like that.

At first I didn't get what it was....other than it was a torso of a person. But then I kept looking at it to see what it was, and all I could come up with was a person popping out of a belly. (the boobs and legs of the bottom body became more obvious then).
So, my guess is that it's supposed to be a baby being born by c-section?
(man, I hope I'm right!!!)

aligotmatt - your cake is beautiful! I prefer the 2nd pic without the mom, but since you emailed your friend she can decide which she likes the best.

I love that you asked for opinions and are being such a great sport by reading the responses and explaining your thoughts behind the design. It is really fun seeing the cake progress too!!!

I also like it without the mom's body. It makes it more about the baby and less about the surgical procedure.

I think it is darling having a baby popping out of the cake rather then the mommy.

Your cake is very cute!

I love the revised version! The color scheme is fantastic and the cake is so darling! I was with pretty much everyone else on the baby popping out of the tummy. I was thinking that having the mom holding a present with the baby popping out as a "surprise" would have been cute too!
