My dh decided shortly before my 1st sons second b-day that buying cakes was too expensive, and that he and I could make the cakes. Well being the anal perfectionist that I am he was not allowed to touch it(You should see his handwriting)
I had only made the usual double layer chocolate cakes with Betty Crocker frosting. So I was very new. My mother-in-law promised to help but of course had to go out of town that weekend.
The DAY of the party I baked a cake in a glass pan that I just had laying around the house (dont remember the size). I was starting to run low on time so couldnt wait until the cake was completely cooled before trying to take it out. I inverted it onto the board and it was completely stuck. We knocked on the bottom of the pan until FINALLY the cake came out......well part of it. We pieced it together as much as we could but it had a LARGE indentation in the middle, looked like a valley.
Literally a couple hours before the party we begin frosting the thing, I had bought frosting at a local cake store because I didnt have the right ingredients for my mother in laws BC recipe. I had bought the paper triangles for the frosting tubes and we had no idea how to fold them. My dad was frantically looking up how to do it on the internet, while I began sweating. I put my inital layer of frosting on only to have have the cake come up through in crumbs. I begin to really sweat, then I begin to yell at my dh for getting me into this and he says he will take over. OVER MY DEAD BODY! We still cant figure how to fold the stupid frosing tubes so we just made something up. I had my dh my dad and my brother in law all watching over my shoulder (giving their two cents worth) as I attempted color my frosting (I was trying for a dirt brown) and as I tried to frost the ever crumbling cake. Meanwhile my mother is in the background screaming at us that we should have just bought one at Albertsons.
Needless to say the whole thing turned into WWIII with me crying and vowing to never do this again. My cake ended up looking decent thanks to the 3 inches of Buttercream icing that were liberally applied to hide the boo boos. I think we finished the cake 15 minutes before the start of the party. I could only laugh when I saw people scraping the layers of frosting off at the party. Oh well I have lived and learned, 5 birthdays and 1 Wilton class later.
My mother still tells me to go buy the cakes!

What a story! i bet that was the worst day ever. But I see that it did push you into continuing to make cakes. It was definitely an eye opening day. Don't worry about your mom. One of these days, even she will be asking you to make a cake for her!! Better baking/decorating is to come with every cake you do!
Whew! I bet you were glad when that day was over! As a side note, I'm sure most of us realize now that it's not always cheaper to make your own cakes when we consider all the hard work that we put into it as well! What does your hubby think now? I charge about $40 CDN (and my customers don't even blink - usually they offer me a tip on top) for an average size b-day cake, when you can buy one in the local grocery here for $20...the two are not even comparable
What a great first cake story! I'm glad the trauma didn't keep you away from decorating I might never have picked up another piping bag if my first went like that--LOL!
That's quite a story! Thank goodness my husband has no aspirations of helping me bake.

Last month I told my cousin that I will make her daughter's 1st birthday cake, as a gift. I don't have any formal training in baking and cake decorating. I only bake simple cakes and not into decorating yet. I bake the cake a day before the birthday. It was a 9x13x3" chocolate cake. Early in the morning (the next day) I did the frosting. It was a boiled icing recipe which I swear I don't want to try again. I read about crumb coating before especially if its a chocolate cake. But I ignored it and believed that its ok not to crumb coat (silly me). The frosting was very sticky, crumbs all over the cake and I couldn't smooth it nicely. I nearly cried and asked myself what's got into my mind that I volunteer to do that cake. I was so frustrated looking at it with crumbs on the icing. I had icings on my hair, our kitchen was like hit by the typhoon. I thought cake decorating was not meant for me. I even convinced myself " Jen, it's ok. It's free anyway!" But infairness, they said they like the taste
Then I did one again, a graduation cake for my sister. It was a butter cake with buttercream icing. This time it was not that complicated. I iced the cake smoothly (although not yet perfect). The shell borders were almost perfect. Compare to the first cake I decorated, I could say that there was an improvement. Can't wait for the third cake! Go girl! We can do it!!!
You're darn right! Stick with it. You'll improve every single time. And have fun while you're at it. When I stop having fun I'll throw in my piping bags and quit. LOL
My husband has helped me with cakes...he even tryed to do stars for me one time....he did ok, but after about 5 stars he put the tip down and said your turn....and he never helped with that part again!
