I want to make a cake for my SIL, who will be 20 on Easter. Any suggestions on how to combine the two. Nothing to fancy because I'm just a beginner. icon_redface.gif

How much of a beginner are you? Have you used fondant and/or gumpaste?

No, I have never used anything but buttercream. No lessons or anything. Just try to learn as I go.

Sounds like me! I started making cakes when my first son (now almost 16) was a couple of years old. I didn't have any cake pans and had to use 9x13 Pyrex!

I will say that once you use fondant a few times it gets easier and it is awesome! You can cover cakes and they are perfectly smooth, and you can make cool decorations!

I still have yet to master making flowers out of icing, I just can't get it right.

I think that instead of trying to combine an Easter theme and birthday theme, it could just be a fresh and beautiful Spring type cake? Maybe flowers if you have that skill? Maybe a tiered cake to make it special would be nice.

why not try simple butterflies, use cookie cutters and cut it out of fondant, which you can buy pre-made at wal-mart or any hobby store.

hope this helps
