I wanted to know if any cake recipe can be used under fondant? Does it make a difference if it is stacked or not.

I was told to make a cake as follows:
1 box cake mix
4 XL eggs
1 cup water or milk
1 pkg dream whip

The first time I made this cake I followed the cake box instructions and cake didn't turn out well. (mix for 30 seconds to combine, scrape down sides, mix for another 20 minutes on low).

So I did some searching on the internet and found the same recipe, but it's instructions were to mix for 30 seconds, scape down sides, then whip on medium speed for 4 minutes. The cake seems to be a little dry, is that a baking issue or am I overmixing the cake?

There seems to be so many great recipes on this site but I don't understand if they can be used under fondant?

Help please.
Thanks,

If the cake isn't tall with tiers, most cakes will stand up to the weight of fondant. the bigger it is, the sturdier the cake should be.
