Do most people make it out of gumpaste and then cover it in fondant? Thanks for your help -

I just made one this weekend...I will post pictures later. But, I used foam core (about 4 pieces) cut in 6x6 squares and I glued them on top of each other. Covered them all in fondant and topped with a gumpaste bow. When I put it on the cake, I put dowels at the back of the cake and rested the lid on those...then I stuck two dowels about an inch and a half out of the cake and made an impression into the foam core. Then I removed the lid and carved out little holes for the sticking out dowels. I rested the lid back on and the lid was open about an inch or so in the front.

Does this make sense? If not I can try to explain better.
